WOMEN’S GOLF

Provincial Championship PLAY IN HEAVY RAIN Teams Match to Auckland The large entry for the Wellington provincial championship, staged by the Wellington Ladies’ Golf Club on the Heretaunga links yesterday, struck the worst of all possible weather. Heavy rain showers from the north-west swept the links throughout the day, but nevertheless the players plugged through the two qualifying rounds with rare resolution, aud thoroughly enjoyed the golf, notwithstanding that they had to change their soaked clothes twice during the day. The conditions of the tournament were that the first sixteen players in the two qualifying rounds should play off for the provincial championship, and the next sixteen should contest the Heretaunga trophy. Mrs. J. Wilson, Auckland provincial champion, headed the list of qualifiers for the championship with steadyrounds of 85 and 80, which were really good under conditions which rendered grips so slippery that clubs could scarcely be held. Next in order of merit came Miss Hanson, the Miramar champion, who recorded 88 and 85; and she was closely followed by Miss Barus-Graham, of Gisborne, the youthful player who did so well at the national championship tournament at Timaru last season. The Gisborne player went round in SO aud SO, aud was a stroke better than Miss V. Fleming, the Christchurch provincial champion, whose cards read 88 and 88. The Qualifiers.
