THE GAME OF CHESS

Local Competition Progress JOTTINGS FROM CLUBS The Wellington Chess League, which now caters for 11 of the clubs in Greater Wellington, has received five entries for the A-grade teams’ tournament, ten entries for the B-grade teams’ tourney, and seven entries for the annual ehampion-of-champions event. There is every prospect of a most successful season. The first round of the B-grade competition was played last week, with the following results: —Wadestown defeated Hutt Valley (4-2) ; Karori won from Ngaio (44-lj); Miramar drew with ■Working Men’s Club (3-3); Wellington C.C. No. 1 defeated the club’s No. 2 side (6-0); and Brooklyn Fire Brigade C.C. won from Victoria University College C.C. (4j-li-). Wadestown Club. Despite the bad weather on Monday, April 24, the Wadestown club had a full team on that evening at the Hutt Valley club’s room. They were complimented on their enthusiasm by ( the local president, Mr. Giesen, in his' speech of welcome. The Hutt Valley players have put up a good record since they joined the league three years ago. They won the B-grade contest in 1930, and also in 1931, while last year they were the runners-up, being only half a point behind the winners. This year the club has been promoted to senior status, and its six strongest players will therefore be taking part in the A-grade competition. On Thursday evening the Karori and Ngaio teams met in the Wellington Chess Club’s room, the former winning comfortably. The Ngaio side was weakened by the absence of J. Glasgow and W. J. Carman. When the Working Men’s club’s team won (his competition last year their only defeat was at the hands of the Miramar C.C.. Last Saturday’s hard-fought match between these two sides was followed with some interest. It ended in a tie (3-3). The Working Men's club's players were handicapped by fhe absence of their captain, J. C. Kirkwood. New University Club. Another interesting contest was that held in Brooklyn on Saturday evening when the representatives of the recently affiliated Victoria University College C’C. played their first interclub fixture. A cordial welcome was extended by Mr. J. I. Goldsmith, president, who trusted that the Varsity players would greatly enjoy their first year with the league. It was regretted that the Varsity team was one short in its first match, having to lose a game by default at board 2, through the inability of D. Andrews to take part. The Wellington club’s No. 1 side proved too strong for the club’s No. 2 team, but several of the games were stubbornly con- ■ tested. The Brooklyn players lost all their eight matches last year; but they have commenced the present season with a good win. The scores in the first-round matches are as follow :—
