AMATEUR ATHLETICS
New Zealand Council MONTHLY MEETING HELD i The monthly meeting of the council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last evening, Mr. R. W. McVilly presiding. A letter from the lion, secretary, blr L. A. Tracy, to the Wellington Show Association was read advising that according to the rules of the association girls competing for cash prizes in the recent marching competition at the show would forfeit their amateur status. It was pointed out that the association viewed the question as a serious one. The Otago Centre forwarded a letter suggesting that athletic and cycling events should be separated at the New Zealand championships to the extent that separate shields should be given for cycling and athletics, and that cycling events should not count for the athletic shield. The question was held over. A recommendation from the West Coast (North Island) Centre recommending the affiliation of the Marton Harriers Club, and enclosing reinstatement forms was approved. Application for recognition of the New Zealand record established by R. 0. Johnson in the pole vault of lift. sJin., at the championship meeting of the Otago Centre on March 4, was approved. The following letter concerning reinstatements was received from Mr. 11. L. Towers, of the Auckland Centre: "It 's obvious that the International Amateur Athletic Federation will not, and cannot, grant an official dispensation to New Zealand. Could the chairman of the I.A.A.F. be asked privately by the chairman of our reinstatement committee for the right to treat New Zealand cases with greater freedom _ where circumstances justify it, such reinstated athletes to be debarred from international contests? If the president of the Olympic Association following on his visit to New Zealand has passed on favourable opinions to fhe president of the 1.A.A.F., then unofficial permission or advice from him to wink at the rule may be forthcoming.” The council decided that it was not prepared to take any action of the kind. Reinstatements were granted the following:—V. G. Herbert, Wimbledon; L. J. Winstanley. Whangarei: and B. .1. Brady, Halcombe. Concerning the application of J. P. Tlulme, Upper Moutere, it was decided that he would not be eligible until January 2, 1935.
