WOMEN’S HOCKEY
Match Between Maori Teams The women’s hockey match between the two Wellington Maori teams, Ton and Poneke, played at Tanera Crescent on Saturday, was full of interest from start to finish. As it was the first occasion upon which both teams had met, the rivalry was exceptionally keen. The more experienced Toa eleven won by five goals to one. Among the interested spectators was Mr. 11. D. Bennett, president of the Poneke club. Considering that the Poneke team is composed of comparatively new players, its performance against the winner of last year’s senior B competition augurs well for the future of the team. There were a few 1 casualties on the Poneke side, due mainly to ignorance of the rules. Miss Budge, a new member of the Toa club, who hails from Otaki, gave an exceptionally bright exhibition on the wing. She scored a fine goal for her team, and should be a great asset to the Toa attack this season. Misses L. Arthur, E. Tc Hiko (2), 11. Wi Necra were Ton’s other scorers. Miss F. Mitchell, who hns speed and used it to much advantage, scored a fine goal for Poneke. With coaching, the Poneke team should develop into a fairly strong combination ad the season advances. Last Saturday was a general practice day for all women's hockey teams. At Newtown Park, College Old Girls, Swifts. Ramblers and Technical Old Girls clubs prepared their teams for the opening of the competitions next Saturday. All flic senior A teams gave the impression that they were fairly well forward, Technical Old Girls, if anything, appearing to he the fittest of the senior teams seen at Newtown Park, Huia, Knrori, and University trained nt Karori Park.
