Safety for Trampers

Sir, —Everyone rejoices over the rescue of tlie four trampers in the Tararua Ranges. This adventure, like others at different times, brings before the notice of the publie the great need for the better equipment of trampers in their wanderings. Tramping is so fascinating to many young people that they go about, it without properly preparing for emergencies which may arise, although past experiences in many parts of New Zealand have brought about disastrous results. Any suggestions for an effective equipment should be welcomed by those concerned in the safety of those who delight in this kind of exercise. After much thought one would suggest the following items as worthy of the consideration of those concerned in making up the kits for the journey. The list, though long, will not. add much to the weight of the pack if distributed among the party:— 1. Food ; concentrated. Raisins, plain chocolate. 2. A Red Cross kit. 3. Small sharp axe, for blazing tbe track by cutting Hie bark of trees on each side, and for cutting firewood, etc. I. Small tin discs with wire to attach to trees. 5. Two triangular flags—one white to hoist in trees: one black to hoist above the snow. (j. A compass. 7. A thermos flask. 8. A shrill whistle. 9. A gun. 10. Writing (iiinrr and pencil, with tin box (to report progress). 11. Coloured toy balloons, with string or thread.—l am. ete., F. BENNETT. Khandallah, April 30.
