THE RACING WORLD

FRANKLIN MEETING

Cup Won by Desert Star PURSE FOR SEA RULER Some Good Dividends Dominion Special Service. Pukckolie, April 29. The Franklin Racing Club's extra meeting was held to-day in beautiful weather. There was a very large attendance. The track was soft after a week’s rain. The totalisalor handled £19,296. Favourites were routed, Ruri being Hie only successful , win favourite, and L’Allegro, Diversion and Rapper the only place favourites to make any return. There were four double figures dividends, aud two others were close up. Won in Fine Style. High Commissioner atoned for bis failure in highweight company at Avondale by winning the Bombay Hurdles in tine style. He was slow to move, and al the end of half a mile was a long way behind the leaders. However, he fenced splendidly, and had the race won at the home turn. Free Air, who is not yet a finished fencer, was battling ou gamely at the end, and will do better in longer distance hurdle races. Master Koley gave an improved display, as did Principal, but the winner's main source of danger went out when Biform fell on the flat just before reaching the home turn. At the time he had closed up just behind the leaders, and looked like taking a baud in the finish. Husliiug improved on past performances to give A. B. and F. W. Stouex another well deserved turn of luck. She is racing more solidly, and may win again in hack company. Diversion, ■ a sound favourite, showed a lot of speed to reach the front at the end of two furlongs, but after looking a certain winner near the post- collapsed badly to be beaten into third place. Transaction ran on strongly into second place, and others to show up for' most of the way were Miss Lulu, Tahae Aiea, Notamint, and Vai Watch. The first division of the Harrisville Hack fell away to a comparatively small field. The favourite, Landlubber, made all the pace, but tired badly at the end, to be well beaten. Intaglio, well ridden by apprentice Baker, waited on the rails behind the pacemakers, and shot through to hold off Puss Moth, who had assisted in the pace-making. Puss .Moth evidently likes conditions .vift, and should be due for a win in this company at any time. Thespis’s effort was creditable. Desert Star’s Cup. L’Allegro was responsible for a solid effort in the Pukekobe Cup, but was well beaten by improving horses, Desert Star and Chief Cook. Desert Star was well back in the middle stages, but finished in characteristic style to win like a good stayer. Chief Cook should win handicaps in his turn. Cruachan, favoured by track conditions, did well to get fourth,, and Teels made a better showing than usual. Koya! Artist could not net on the ground, and Jonathan, although he made a short-lived dash in the straight, was very disappointing. Mahkill, who scored a surprise victory in the Second Division of the Harrisville .■Hack, was always up behind the pacemaker, Illuminelli, and taking charge at the turn was not afterward troubled. Imamint showed signs of returning form by coming along at the finish to get second. Gigantic was under pressure for most of the journey, and the only time he was making an impression was oyer the last furlong. He races as if staying is his forte, and may improve if tried over longer journeys. United and Foulwind had every chance. There was another reverse for investors when Cherry King won the Te Kohanga Handicap convincingly. He took charge at the turn to win easily. He should be decidedly useful next season. Rapper did not seem to handle conditions well, but his fitness and gnniencss enabled him to beat Gay Shiela for second in the last few strides. Buri’s Fine Display. Ruri impressed in the I’uni Hack Cup. by giving the leaders a big start at the home turn and then putting in a remarkable run to win, going away, by a big margin. Gay Brone,y ran gamely, into second place, and Golden Sceptre, hitherto regarded as a non-stayer, did surprisingly well to get third. Holly Lu just faded out of a place after looking a likely winner at the turn. Sea Ruler drew No. 7 position at the barrier in the Paerata Handicap, but started .from No. 2, and beginning well, always had the rails, and revelling in the conditions, held off all challenges to win nicely. Speedmini. and Protomint were badly left, and after being a long way hack at the turn, Speedmint rattled home in fine style to gel. third., She appeared very unlucky to lose. Knrangapai ran one of his best races for second. Results in Detail By Telegraph—Tress Association. THE QUORN RETIRES

Gelding Allowance Deleted

DEATH OF SINGLETON

Notes and Comments

(By

“The Watcher.'')

The Quorn has been thrown out of work and it is probable that liis racing career is over. He was never an easy horse to train, but T. Lloyd exercised great patience and developed him into a smart performer, tlie Auckland Railway Handicap last Boxing Day being evidence of his class as a sprinter. Unfortunately, on top of bis leg troubles, he has become affected in the wind, and this lias decided liis owner against trying him further.

End of Singleton. Singleton broke down badly after racing on the flat at Avondale, and it was decided to destroy him on Thursday. Singleton, by Autumn—Bobella. was a hurdler of great promise, but after winning the Trenthain Hurdles in brilliant style nearly two years ago. he wene amiss in the Winter Hurdles and had to be retired. A further attempt to train him was being made by Miss K. Smith, of Takanini. but it proved unavailing.

Allowance Deleted. A decision to fall into line with the Auckland and Canterbury clubs and to delete the gelding allowance (31b.) in future classic events was made by the stewards of the Wellington Racing Chib at the monthly meeting hist week. The decision affects the Wellesley Stakes and the N.Z. St. Leger Stakes (1935).

Returning Home. The following horses are flue in Wellington by the Monowai from Sydney today: Golden Hair, Aufoptiy. Ln Moderne, Dovelike and Posy. There is also a yearling by Rossentlnle. purchnsed by Mr. J. Donald, of the Westmere stud, Wanganui.

This Week’s Racing. Racing fixtures set down for this week are Egmont on Wednesday and Thursday; Amberley on Saturday, and the first day of the Nelson meeting on Saturday. The second day at Nelson will be Monday next.

Nelson Acceptances. Acceptances for the first day of the Nelson Jockey Club's annual meeting will close to-night, at 8 o'clock.

A Sensational Win. Mount Boa scored a sensational win in the South Canterbury Handicap ou Saturday (says the Christchurch "Star”). Though last into the straight, lie fairly flew in the run home, and won decisively. Princess Argosy set a liot pace, and after a quarter of a mile she was followed .by Gustavo, Cricket Bat, Argentic, Martian Chief and Kapelagh. The field continued much in that order to the entrance to the straight, with Mount Boat clear last. Gay Crest was in front nt the distance front Argentic, witli Martian Chief finishing on wide out. Mount Boa came with a great run, catching the leaders near the half distance. He won by a length and a half front Gay Crest, with Argentic a length away. Martian Chief and Princess Argosy were next. The winner was seventh and sixth choices, paying a big win dividend. Death of Dulen.

It is reported from the south that the four-year-old Dulen died recently from nn attack of inflammation. lie was a smart two-yenr-old, with whom P. T. Hogan won a gootl race at Trcntham, but he did not train on.

Cost of Yearlings. With reference to the three yearlings which arrived at Auckland from Sydney lust week, Mr. C. E. Major states that the charges for shipping, freight, attention, port dues, commission, Government veterinary charges, both in Sydney and Auckland, and other items make the cost of the horses very much greater.than the purchase prices at auction. Mr. Major adds that lie purchased the horses acting as the agent for a friend. Silver Ring Resumes.

Silver Ring, who has boon on the retired list: for n few months, rejoined It. W. King's active team this week. He looks in healthy condition to start on it preparation for spring racing. Front N.Z. Stock.

The Addington trotting trainer. W. J. Tomkinson, had a commissioner at the Sydney yearling sales, where he made a purchase on behalf of a Christchurch sportsman, securing a colt by Legionnaire from Lahinch for 120 guineas. Legionnaire, who is one of Mr. P. Miller's English importations, is by I’halaris from Spear Bridge, by Spearmint from Santa Brigida, by St. Simon from Bridget, sister to Melton. Lahinch is a New Zea-land-bred mare by Kilbroney from Vanna, by Charlemagne from Savanna, by Stepn'iak from .Seashell, by Chainshot from Nautilus. This is a very successful branch of the ’Waterwitch family, and Lahinch has produced several winners during her stud career in Australia.

Win for Jamieson. J. T. Jamieson bad a win at Canterbury Park on Saturday with Voyugeur, his ’ three-year-old colt by Caravel from Vanga, the dam of Flying Prince. Voyageur cost Jamieson GOO guineas as a yearling. and while be has been some time making a return he has always shown a lot of promise, and it is likely this success may be the forerunner of others. Although 'not cabled, the principal event, the Canterbury Bark Handicap, was won bv Crnignvon. a cast-off from the stable of F. D. Jones. The track was heavy. How Peter Pan Was Bred.

According to Mr. P. E. Brown, the well-known breeder of 'Whittingham, New Sou lit Wales, Peter Pan was bred really by chance. lie states that when Mr. J. E. Brien had Pantheon, he (Mr. Brown) desired to obtain a mare to make up the quota of live for the Tracery horse, and approached Mr. R. it. Dangar, who, although an admirer of Tracery blood, nt the moment was not keen to send any marcs to Pantheon. Finally. Mr. Brown persuaded Mr. Dangar, ami he sent along Alwinti. The produce of the five mares was a chestnut colt and four fillies, the colt being Peter Pan.

Sore Again. . Admiral Drake tailed the field most ot the way in the Tescheniaker Handicap at the South Canterbury meeting on Thursday, and he was lame when he pulled up'. He broke down in the spring and he" has not been long iu work after a spell 1 .

Another Spell. r , Carinthia, the winner of the Grand National Hurdles in 11)30. had to be rested last winter on account of leg troubles. He was put into work again at Washdyke. some time ago. with a view to another winter enmpaign. but as one ol his legs showed signs of weakness, lie was turned out again. He will he spelled till next autumn, when it is hoped he will stand a preparation.

First Win Beyond a Mile. Though Cricket Bal had shown good form at a mile, he scored his first success over n mile and a quarter when he won the Teschemaker Handicap at Washdyke mt Thursday. He was always well placed and be drew out iu the straight to store decisively. It was an attractive performance ami the Winning Hit horse is at his best now, after a bard season’s galloping. The case was the appeal of Lord Glanely. who owns a stud ofAllot oughbreds at Exning, near Newmarket, against the assessment for income tax un d?r schedule D of profits earned by his Lord S 'Glanely’s contention was that he lost money on the stud farm, andl that anj profits earned by the stallions ought n to be assessed separately from the profits or losses o fthe farm as a whole. The Court of Appeal had by a majority unheld a decision of Mr. Justice Rowlatt adverse to him, and the present appeal was heard by Lord Buckmastcr, Loid Tomlin, Lord Russell, of Killowen, and Lord Wright. -wiirrml At previous sittings, Mr. Willreu Greene, K.C., with whom was Mr. C. LKing, for the appellant, read the dissenting judgment of Imrd Justice Romer, who stated'that Lord Glanely’s activities in connection with the breeding and racing of thoroughbreds resulted in a loss of something approaching £lB,OOO a year. The question involved in the apepal was whether: Lord Glanely should pay income tax for the privilege of losing that annual SU The Attorney-General (Sir T. W. IL Inskip), with whom was Mr. Reginald Hills, for the Inspector of Taxes, arguing in support of the judgment of the Cour, of Appeal, admitting that, with the exception of the year 1919. when Parade won the Derby, Lord Glenely had always made a heavy loss on his breeding and racing activities, but contended that the letting out of the services of stallions was carried on upon commercial lines, and the profits derived from it should be separated for tax purposes. It sible to treat the whole of Lord Glanely_s activities, including racing, as one business concern, the racing enterprise not being a commercial one. Their lordships agreed that the appeal should be allowed. ... . Lord Buckmaster, in his judgment, sa < Lord Glanely’s claim was that he should only be taxed under section B >n respect of his occupation of the land, and that the profits derived from the use of the stallions were not profits separate from and outside the purpose of his occupation ot in this case being for the purpose of a stud farm, the use o f stallions upon the farm could not be taxed unless it could be said that something distinct and separable from the purpose of the occupation. The appeal waa allowed, with costs. MARLBOROUGH ENTRIES Lists for Next Week The following are the nominations for the Marlborough Racing c 'l'J s meeting, to be held on May .1- and K. FIRST DAY. Too Much Latitude. Irish Lancer did half-pace work over two circuits on the plough at Wingatui last Saturday, writes “Sentinel.” He is being proclaimed as a rogue, but bis real trouble is to be found in other directions. He wouj.d do better as a gelding and incidentally he has been allowed to have far too much of his own way, and the combination wrecks'bis chance of being a high-class racehorse and repeating the brilliant form he displayed when winning the Jockey Club Handicap.
