RESULTS AT A GLANCE

FIRST DIVISION TABLE

PETONE’S DECISIVE WIN Team in Scoring Form I’etone scored a decisive win at the expense of Swifts on Saturday. In the first spell Swifts seriously threatened the home team, the half-time score being 2-2,, Leslie equalising just before the interval. In the second spell I’etone speeded up the game and shot freely, scoring four more “oals to which Swifts were unable to tespond. Leslie failed to convert a penalty for hands. The teams were: — Petone: MeVean: Drown and Haines; McAnslin. Campbell and Lameron. Cart mell. Watson, Leslie, Moods and Crai„ Swifts: Bradford; Archer and Lon„bottom; Glover, Dainty and , M ‘ ’ a lL^ ellj - Shaukie, Adams, Bilby and Han ken. Referee, Mr. A. E. Caisley. Five minutes after the start Leslie netted from a centre by Cartmell, a first timer Following this the halves tailed to -et going, and the forwards were doing too much tapping instead of sll^', . ns i ; Swifts rallied their forces, and attackin„ from the left wing beat Brown, Hawken centring for Adams to equalise. 1 layin o a brisk game Swifts had the better of. ex-chaiv-es, and MeVean was kept actne. Longbottom cleared from an attack jy Cartmell and AVatson. and putting in -ood team work, Swifts pressed and Shaukie netted from a pass by Adam.-. I’etone looked like going down, but just

on the interval Leslie made the score level again, 2-2. In the second half I’etone played last and good football. Campbell being conspicuous. Bradley made a brilliant save from Woods, and again from Campbell. I’etone pressed, and finally Campbell headed through over the crowd of players in front of him. Bradford touched the. ball, but could not hold it. Swifts rallied, but’ MeVean was safe. Campbell fed the right-winger, whose pass enabled Leslie to shoot. Bradford saving a stinger. Forcing pla_y on Swifts’ goal Watson netted from an overhead kiek. I’etone -1, Swifts 2. Five minutes later Woods scored with a left-footer into the corner of the net. Swifts were in the picture for a while, but had no luck. Woods scored the sixth goal, an easy one for Fetone. In the closing stages Sbankie tested MeVean with a great shot, which was just scraped away. The final result was: I’etone G, Swifts 2. FAST GAME PLAYED Hospital beats Technical Thirteen goals were scored in rhe Hos-pital-Technical match at Hospital on Saturday. It was a fast game, in which the newcomers to the senior division acquitted themselves with credit, and will give some of the older clubs bard fights before the season is through. The teams were: —- Hospital: Ell; Miles and Thompson; ,1. Woods, Treweek and Briggs; Marshall, Gibbs. Stanbridge, Simons and Windley. Technical O.B.: Dedman; Bosnuda and Taylor: Pullen. Beadle and Upchurch; Stewart, Webster, Liddicoat. Perry and McMillan. Thompson stopped a solo effort by Liddicoat. and Simons at the end of a run was brought to earth in the goal area when about to shoot. A centre then came from Gibb to Windley, who netted. In a determined rush on Hospital goal Liddicoat equalised, and maintaining the pressure the same player put Technical ahead. Hospital retaliated. Gibbs scoring from ’Windley's corner kick, and a few minutes later Gibbs performed the hat trick, giving Hospital the lend, 3-2. Stanbridge received from a throw-in, made tracks for goal, and beat Redman again. I’lay became fast and hard, and from a flag kick bv Windley Trewick scored No. 5 for Hospital. Technical rallied and had the backs bustled, in which Miles put through his own goal, 5-3. There was a little rain in the second spell. ’Windley twice put shots behind, Gibbs hit the crossbar, and Stanbridge scored from the rebound. 6-3. Simons sent a long pass to Marshall, who sent in a swerving shot from the side line to beat Redman again. Hospital were awarded a penalty, Redman saving, but Woods followed up and netted. 8-3. Technical forced Hospital back and I’erry reduced the lead in a melee. Making the pace a merry one Technical kept Hospital on the defence, and just before the whistle went Ell let an easy one through from McMillan. Hospital 8, Technical 5. WIND SPOILS GAME Marist Wins by Penalty Although Marist defeated 'Waterside by three goals to two. that fact cannot reasonably be taken into consideration when the merits of both teams are being considered. The strong wind which blew at the Ki’lbirnie Stadium upset the whole game. Ball control, shooting, and decent combination were practically impossible and although there were occasional flashes of bright play, they were overshadowed by futile, kicking for which the

wind was mostly responsible. The teams were as tollow: Marist: Turkiiigtou: \ auey. Laracj, Kindle. Bird, Dully, Barion Lmulou, L. Kershaw. J. Kershaw, Marshmen!. Waterside: L’orteous; Abernethy, Gog--in- McLellan. Haines. Hastings; Dunsmuir, I’attersou, MeLeml, Loiigbmtoiu, James. , . Referee. Mr. Brian. Waterside, with the wind behind them, had the better of pla.v in the first half, during which both sides missed a number of scoring opportunities. Jjongbottoni, Hasiiugs/and Patterson were prominent throughout the spell for M.-tlerside, and made openings for what would uorma.ly have been good movements. The first goal came when McLeod sent in a fine drive, which Turkington could not hold, and Patterson banged it into came shortly afterward, when Bird sent out to Marshmcnt, who squared to E. Kershaw, .the centre bear Porteous easily, but the goal appeared to be scored from an off-side position. Patterson netted again for Waterside just before half-time, when the score was 2-1. .Smart work by the Marist forwards saw play go from one end of the ground to the oilier, and E. Kershaw scored after l’orteous had partially saved from J. Kershaw. Waterside were penalised tor handling in the penally area, and J. Kershaw made the score .1-2 in Marist s favour. There was no further score. HUTT BEATEN Win for Diamonds by 5 —2 Diamonds beat Hint at the. Butt Recreation Ground by 5 goals to 2. The teams were as follow: — Diamonds: Wyatt; M otherspooii. Hopper; 'Todd. Geddis, Beasley; It. McLeod, Neal, Baker. Cunningham. Stark. Hutt: Wilkes; Gardner, Holmes; McDougall. Butland, A. Stobbs; .Nieoll, Smith, J. Stobbs, McGrath, Batchelor. Keferee. Mr. G. Jackson, Hutt kicked off against the wind, and G. Stobbs went close to scoring after receiving from McDougall. Holmes was doing some good defensive work. The first score came when Todd centred to Baker, who headed into the net. A couple of unsuccessful shots by McGrath followed. and then McLeod sent to Cunningham. who beat ’Wilkes. The score at the interval was: Diamonds 2, Hutt 0. Diamonds held a slight advantage in the second spell, during which five goals were scored.
