Sir Austen Chamberlain Makes Trenchant Attack on “Savagery of Pride” EUROPE VIEWED WITH GRAVE ANXIETY By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London,' April 12. In the House of Commons Sir Austen Chamberlain made a trenchant attack on Germany, saying “Frankly, I view the present situation in Europe with grave anxiety.” "I cannot pretend to conceal the state ■of uncertainty in which the world has been left concerning what was actually proposed or agreed to at Rome,” he said. ' “What passed in Germany ■ seems to , me to render this a singularly inopportune moment to talk about revision of treaties.”

Amid cheers. Sir Austen asked: “What is this new spirit of German nationalism? It is the worst of the old Prussian imperialism, with the added savagery Of pride and exclusiveness. No subject not of pure Nordic birtli is to have equality and rights of citizenship in the nation to which they belong. “Are you going to discuss revision with a Government like that?” said Sir Austen amid loud cheers. “Will you dare to put another pole under the wheel of such a Government? As long as Germany is affected by this narrow exclusive spirit which says it is a crime to be in favour of peace and a crime to be a Jew, that is not the Germany to which we can afford to make concessions. Before you can disarm or urge others to disarm you must see a Germany whose mind is turned to peace, and who will use equality of status not to menace the safety of others. Mr. Winston Churchill said: "So surely as Germany acquired military equality, while her grievances were unredressed, and while she is in her present temper, so surely would we be within measurable distance of a' renewal of a general European war.” MORE KILLINGS Communists Shot Down BURGOMASTER’S SUICIDE (Received April 14, 6.30 p.m.) Berlin, April 13. Nazis in Munich shot three Communists dead, and wounded a fourth while he was attempting to escape from the Dachau concentration camp. Following arrest on charges of breach of trust, the assistant burgomaster of Dusseldorf hanged himself in his coll. Nazis arrested the chief burgomaster, Herr Lehr, on similar charges. Chemnitz in the night raided the home of Dr. Weiner, a well-known Jewish lawyer, who served with distinction in the war, produced a warrant for his arrest, and removed him in a motorcar. His bullet-riddled body was later found in the countryside. The police declare that the warrant was fictitious. “A DEED OF BLOOD” . ENGLISHMAN HELD Arrest Made in Berlin SUSPECTED COMMUNIST Official Wireless. Rugby, April 12. Replying to a question in Parliament Sir John Simon, Foreign Secretary, said that one Englishman, Geoffrey Fraser, was arrested in Berlin on April 4 because lx had in his possession , Communist documents, including mat- ’ ter relating to subversive propaganda and untrue statements regarding atrocities in Germany. He was further suspected of intention of spreading these untrue reports among the German army and police. The final indictment of Fraser had not yet been drawn up. ' Arrangements have been made for his Majesty’s Consul ,10 visit Fraser to-morrow. Fraser has received every consideration at the hands of the police and is reported to be in good health FADING OUT Dr. Stresemann’s Party Berlin, April 12. The late Dr. Stresemann’s People’s Party is now rapidly disappearing. Its headquarters state that the party places Itself at the disposal of the new regime pending further political developments, but a number of branches are dissolving themselves and their members joining the Nazis.
