Relief of Winter Distress MAYOR’S APPEAL FOR HELP Every penny spent on the many activities planned in connection with the Eastbourne Easter Fair will go to a special fund controlled by the Mayor of Eastbourne and the town clerk of the borough. It will be trust money to be applied for the relief of distress during the coming winter months. Although the population of Eastbourne is not much more than 2000, from present indications the amount to be handed over to the committee controlling the East Harbour Distress Fund should amount to quite a substantial figure. Every care is being taken to see that expenses are kept down to the minimum. The money is subject to Government audit, and therefore every item of expenditure incurred will be carefully scrutinised. In au appeal for support, the Mayor of Eastbourne, Mr. S. F. Fisher, states it will be essential to have funds available for the relief of distress on the Eastbourne side of the harbour. “The Easter Fair,” he added, “promises to I>lace to the credit of the Citizens’ Committee a substantial sum for this very purpose. How very necessary it is to be able to provide for the kiddies of parents who through misfortune are out of work. These youngsters cannot understand the economic problems which face us, therefore we have to do everything in cur power to protect them and give them a share of the comfort and nourishment to which they as young citizens are entitled. “For this reason alone the campaign for funds which has been promoted is well-worth while, and every resident in the East Harbour District is urged to give their fullest support to all the activities which have 1 een and are being organised to gain votes for the candidates in the Queen contest It Is very gratifying to see the amount of support which has already been accorded to the campaign, and I would just like to add a word to the few residents who so far have refrained from taking an active part in the proceedings. Little good can be done by adopting a luke-warm attitude, and no good at all can be done by adopting an attitude of passive resistance. “Money is required for the specific purpose for which the Easter Fair is being held, and either passive indifference or petty antagonism on the part of a few means that these few are depriving the fund of support which is due. With this opportunity which presents itself to raise sufficient money to carry the relief commitments of th(? East Harbour District over the coming winter I earnestly invite every man, woman, and child in the community to join in and help make the Easter Fair campaign the unqualified success which it deserves to be.”
