ATHLETIC SPORTS

Dewar Shield Contest WIN FOR WELLINGTON Cyclists’ Close Finishes KITTO SHIELD TO KIWI Keen sport was enjoyed by an attendance of about 3000 at the athletic meeting held under electric light at the Basin Reserve on Saturday even- , ing. The meeting, whiclj was conducted by the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association, decided the winners of the Dewar Shield, which was won by the Wellington club. The A. C. Kitto Shield for inarching went . to Kiwi, whose performances throughout the season have been particularly impressive. ’ Although a couple of light showers fell during' the evening they were , not sufficient to cause any discomfort, and conditions generally were very satisfactory. > The Scots College Pipe Band led the grand parade, which started the programme at 7.45. Of the 19 events decided, nine were for the shield. The Athletic club scored the greatest, number of points, but Wellington was successful on the aggregate. Of all the events, probably the cycling created more interest than any other, especially as F. Grose, Canterbury, and J. Wade, Wanganui, New Zealand’s champion riders, were competing. Their races were extremely close. The half-mile was won by Wade in 71sec., with Grose second ; and the mile by Grose, with Wade second. Grose also won the three-mile, in which Wade finished third. A good deal of interest was taken in the inter-house relay and 75 yards handicap, which were won by Woolworth’s and Bonds Hosiery respectively. Both in the grand parade and in the racing the girls performed excellently. The starts which she was conceding in the 100 and 110 yards handicaps proved too much for Miss Norma Wilson, the Hawke’s Bay runner. She ran third to Miss Jean Murray, off SJyds., in the 100, in which the winner’s time was 114-5 sec. The final was won by Miss Lord, off 12yds., in the same time. In the 110 yards Miss Wilson finished third in her heat, but was unplaced in the final, which also went to Miss Lord, who was generously handicapped. In the following list of points scored for the shield, the first lot of figures are the points scored on Saturday and the second is the Total number:— Wellington 6, 36; Athletic 24. 35; Olympic 12, 30; Varsity 18. 18; Kiwi 0, 15: Miramar 6, 12; Petone 0, 10; College Old Boys 0,9; Hutt 0, 9.
