The Greatest Leader

Sir, —It is surprising, but also hopeful, in these days to note the number of your correspondents who are getting down to hard thinking regarding the times, and seeking for truth. One of them recently remarked that the old adage about “the hour produces the man” seems to have failed, and certainly the facts would appear to support his conclusion, in that the world lacks leaders. We should not allow ourselves to forget, however, that the world turned down its greatest Leader long ago, and still does so, the only one whose policy and example (for He lived what He taught) were an absolute safeguard against the present muddle we have got into, which, few of us will deny, is the result of greed and self-seeking.

No sane man among us will deny that we owe all that is best in our civilisation to Christ and His teaching, and He is still far ahead of us. The question is, have we the courage to adopt the Christ way, as individuals, as church leaders, as communities? It simply isn’t honest to say it has failed, when we know it has never been tried. —I am, etc., R.N. Petone, March 17.
