NOTED AUSTRALIAN
Visitor to New Zealand SIR SAMUEL HORDERN Thirty years have passed since Sir Samuel Hordern, of Sydney, travelled down through the North Island to Wellington by coach and on horseback. This time he has made the trip by motor-car, arriving in Wellington for dinner last evening after an interesting run from Napier. Sir Samuel insisted to “The Dominion” that he had come here on holiday, not to bo interviewed; so although he is one of the most well-known men in Australia, with a host of interests and enthusiasms, he could not, be led into discussing anything so dull as the exchange rate. His smiling directness on this point made it impossible to pursue. On the other hand, everything Sir ■Samuel has seen in New Zealand so far has pleased him. He has come down in a leisurely fashion from Auckland through Rotorua and Hawke’s Bay, and has found the scenery and trip most pleasant. With him are Mr. W. Douglass, chairman of directors of the Hotel Australia, Mr. M. P. Sheedy, of a wellknown Sydney flrm, and the Hon. Sir James Murdoch, M.L.C., who will arrive from Napier and join the remainder of the party to-day. Sir Samuel himself is president of the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales, chairman of the A.M.P. Society, a member of the committee of the Australian Jockey Club, and president or member of many other bodies of widely differing kinds. Until 1926 he was governing director of Anthony Hordern and Sons, of Sydney. He is a racehorse owner, having owned a Melbourne Cup winner, and is a breeder of blood horses and stud Jersey cattle. On Monday he and his companions will leave for Picton, returning later in the week and sailing eventually from Auckland on their return to New South Wales.
