THE RACING WORLD

ON THE CARPET Jockeys’ ‘‘Bad Riding” EGMONT CLUB’S LUCK Curious Betting Phase (By "Carbine.”) Three hurdle riders were on the carpet after the jumping event on the first day of the Egmont meeting. Tho riders were W. Feilditig (Marjoram), W. J. Bowden (Tenaere), and A. Corner (Kimbo). The stipendiary steward, Mr. B. N> Sandilands, reports that these horsemen were told that they had ridden badly and that something better was expected of them. Racing Men Sail. Messrs. It. N. Magill, J. S. Brunton, and It. McKay, three Australian racing men who spent some weeks in New Zealand, sailed by the Maratna yesterday on their return to the Commonwealth. The brood marcs Redshank and White Tulip went by the same steamer. Redshank, who is the dam of Red Manfred, is in foal to Iliad. White Tulip has a filly foal by Chief Ruler.

For Longer Journeys. A fear has existed for some time past that Lady Quex would break down. She appeared to be all right after racing and winning at Ilawera on Wednesday, nnd is reported to have exhibited no ill effect next day.

Lady Quex who has been a good winner of short events may race over a middle distance at New Plymouth next week. Mahora Resumes.

Mahora, who was a good winter performer a couple of seasons ago, has been put into work again, and if he keeps sound is sure to be an interesting competitor when the tracks become softer. Mahora is reported to be quite sound at present, and it is hoped that he will stand training. One of the best races he won was the Whyte Handicap at the Wellington winter meeting two seasons ago.

Change of Stables. Constant Sun has left O. Cox’s stable at Hawera, and is being trained now by L. G. Morris at Marton. He is an Australian-bred gelding, by Australian Sun, and on some of the races he ran last season was expected to develop into a fair stayer.

Copey’s Great Jumping. IljWfera trdck-watchers say that Copcy, always a fine jumper, is schooling more brilliantly than ever he did in the past. Cop4y is being prepared for winter racing. It is probable thht he will be ridden in his races by A. V. Weston, who is apprenticed to J. Fryer, owner of Copcy. Weston rode him in the hurdle race at Ilawera on Thursday. Copey, on that occasion, had no difficulty with the obstacles, but lacked speed. However, he was travelling well at the finish. Back to Work.

Carfex has rejoined the active contin«ent at Hawera. lie looks well and should win his share when he resumes racing, as he is smart.

Prolific. What a prolific cow the sport of racing is for the taxation milkman may be gathered from the fact that the small meeting held at Opotiki last month yielded £250.

Betting Curiosity. A curious phase of win and place betting came to light at Hawera. Aga Khan, a hot favourite on each machine, in the Nolan Hack Handicap, dead-heated for first place. Those who backed him to win lost money, but those who supported him for « place won money. He paid nearly twice as much on the place machine as on the win machine. The reason is that while the dead-heat did. not affect his place dividend it halved his win dividend. Out of Luck. The Eginont Racing Club had bad luck with, its summer meeting, held this week. Fields were small, but, thanks to the win and place betting system, the totalisator turnover kept up fairly wtll on the first day, which was windy and uneuticing. Tbe second day whs wet, and the heav-ily-reduced attendance (together with fields that did not attract betting), resulted in a substantial reduction in the totalisator receipts. It may be assumed that the meeting will result in loss rather than profit. Why He Lost. Bad jumping lost Tenacre two good chances of winning a hurdle race at Hawera. On the first day a mistake about two furlongs from home was fatal to his prospects. On the second day he hit nearly everything there was to strike. But Tenacre is well, and has been galloping splendidly, so he is likely to be raced at New Plymouth. Smart. Kimbo is a pretty smart hurdler under light weights. He jumped fast, and in every way outpaced the other hurdlers on the second day at Hawera, and, despite a rise in weight, will not be easy to beat at New Plymouth. Course Improved. The Now Plymouth course has had the benefit of several days' steady rain. The course is expected to furnish perfect going for next week's meeting. Better Titan Ever. Fiji’s close third in the Wellington Cup was a surprise, but his subsequent form reveals it as no flash in the pan. He won the Egmont Cup most decisively. and as he is better now than ever before other successes should follow. Quick Recovery. Gay Marigold, who was unable, because of soreness, to race nt Takapuna, is reported to have recovered quickly and to have resumed work. Iler trouble was” in a shoulder, and is thought to have been caused by a jar. Jaloux’S Trainer. .Taloux has left P. V. Mason's stable and is being trained by C. Davey, who prepared Compels for Jaloux's owner, Mr. P. F. Campbell. Gustavo's Progress. So far the latest effort to train Gustavo lias met with encouragement. He has been galloping well, and appears to be sound.

Fleeting Glance Sold. Sir Charles Clifford has disposed of tho three-year-old filly Fleeting Glance, by Day Comet from Wild Hind, to Mrs. A. B. Talbot, of Christchurch, a newcomer to the ranks of owners.

Fleeting Glance will in future be trained by S. Barr, and will race at M'ingatui.

GREAT RACING MARES Trio of Doughty Stayers AUSTRALIA’S CHAMPIONS "In a survey of Australian racing the fact is established that it is necesasry to go back a good stretch of years to find a mare in the position of champion, writes "Phaeton” in the Auckland "Herald.” "Over 30 years have sped their flight since La Carabine and Wakeful were the outstanding performers, and it is 18 years since Carlita went off the scene. The time is therefore overdue for Australia to again produce a mare up to the champion standard. "La Carabine was raced at two years old. As a youngster she was actually set to contest the Doncaster Handicap, the big mile race open to all ages at the Australian Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, and, although she failed that dav, she was destined to win marked fame later on as a stayer. She won the Australian Cup. two miles and a quarter, and the Sydney Cup, two miles, and in two successive years won the Champion Stakes, three miles, which showed her up as a true stayer. “Wakeful did not make her debut on the turf until she had reached the age of four years, and her record is a very bright one. She contested 44 races,. and was unplaced on only three occasions. Wakeful made a great effort to win the Melbourne Cup of 1903 under the steadier of 10.0, which represented an impost 141 b. in excess of weight-for-age. and she ran Lord Cardigan, 0.8, to half a length, in a solidly-run two miles. The great merit attached to Wakeful's performance in that memorable struggle was subsequently well established by the form displayed by Lord Cardigan, who in the same season won the Sydney Cup under 8.7, and also weight-for-age . honours. There is a consensus of opinion that Wakeful is entitled to be accepted as the greatest mare that graced the Australian turf. "Carlita's form whs marred somewhat by patchiness, but she won Derby honours under meritorious conditions, while her victory in the Champion Stakes, three miles, at three years old,, and in the King’s Cup, run over a similar distance, at a year older, give her a place among the proved stayers, for when she won the last-named race the time recorded was only a quarter of a second outside the Australian record for three miles.” Following is a summary of the performances of the three mares mentioned above: LA CARABINE (By Carbine —Orotava).
