Dangerous Bulls

Sir. —Like your correspondent G. Howden, I have noticed the large number of fatalities and injuries caused by bulls, mostly of the Jersey breed, during this last year. There have been four near Hastings, two in Poverty Bay, two in the Palmerston district, and two or more in Auckland. No doubt there are many more unreported cases. I have been among stock for nearly 50 years, and have had several narrow’ escapes from Jersey bulls, but now my motto is, never trust a bull, especially if he is a fawn-coloured one. He is a dangerous animal, and cunning, but he can look very placid, meek, and gentle when it suits him.

A relative of mine, an Ashburton farmer, lately returned from a tour of America, told me that he saw scores of bulls- wearing masks, which made them quite harmless, and that women and children managed them and incurred no risk. I have not seen the masks advertised here, but I think they are procurable in New Zealand, ns about six months ago “from the road near Hastings—l saw two bulls wearing them. I do think it is time that those in authority did something to- lessen the loss of valuable life that takes place every season in our Dominion. —I am, etc.. SAFETY FIRST. Hastings, Feb. 2.
