DARING ESCAPE MADE

Naval Rating in Lock-up POLICE BICYCLE MISSING Dominion Special Service. Auckland, Jan. 25. Arrested at Ngatea on Friday, on charges of deserting from H.M.S. Diomede and of converting a motor-cycle to his own use, a young naval rating, Walter John Clues, made a daring escape from the lock-up at Thames on Sunday night. The police believe that he regained possession of the motor-cycle which he was riding when arrested. ~ After the arrest of Clues at Ngatea, the motor-cycle, believed to be stolen property, was locked in a shed there while the arrested man was taken to Thames. He appeared ini the Police Court there on Saturday, and was remanded in custody to appear in Auckland on Monday. However, when a constable visited his cell on Sunday morning he found that the ventilator had been torn down and that Clues had apparently made his escape through the ventilator. Shortly afterward it was reported that a bicycle belonging to a constable had been stolen from the yard of the police station. It was later found at Ngatea, and almost simultaneously the discovery was made that the shed in which the motor-bicycle had been stored had been broken ojien and the cycle taken. The motor-cycle was found later in the day some distance from Ngatea. The petrol tank was empty, but the machine was undamaged. The escaped man is of very slight build. sft. sJin. in height, and has fair hair. He was dressed in a grey coat, fawn trousers, and a blue shirt. At the time of his escape he had neither hat nor tie.
