TO SEE MINISTER

Unemployment Conditions MAYOR OF PALMERSTON Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, Jan. 26. On account of what is described as unsatisfactory replies received from the Minister of Employment, the Hon. A. Hamilton, to recent letters and telegrams, the Mayor of Palmerston North, Mr. A. E. Mansford, visited Wellington to-day to interview the Minister. Yesterday Mr. Mansford sent a telegram to the Minister pointing out that the certifying officer at Palmerston North had received no further instructions. The telegram added that if the Minister compared the payments made to all classes of unemployed in Auckland and Dunedin with Palmerston North he' would appreciate the cause of unrest in Palmerston North. ; , RELIEF . ALLOCATIONS Protest from Greymouth By Telegraph—Press Association. Greymouth, Jan. 25. A large public meeting representing local bodies and unemployed was held at the Town Hall to-night protesting against the inadequacy of relief allocation. Speakers included the Mayors of Greyinouth, Runanga and Brunner, the chairman of the Cobden Town Hoard, representatives of the county, and unemployed and Labour organisations. A resolution passed read: “That this meeting strongly protests against the inadequate relief money in this district, and urges the Unemployment Board to make immediate increase.” It was decided that the Minister be asked to place Greymouth in the same category as the main centres for relief purposes, as the cost of living was far greater there than in the cities, and that the Minister be asked to review all schemes with a view to removing the hardship of the stand-down or short week, but this was not to be done at the expense of the other three weeks. An amendment, however, was carried as follows: “That this meeting make a definite request to the Government at once to cancel all relief work, and in lieu thereof, pay sustenance, as proyided. by the Unemployment Act.”
