Few,first preferences will be decisive, some.of the contests needing si dozen successive counts. Impersontaions were widespread, but the rowdyism was nothing unusual. The military were occasionally called in to assist the police, and the Army Comrades’ Association used tire-levers and spanners against armed opponents. At Ballyduff a youth, was shot m the leg. Soldiers threatened to use tear gas and quelled a disturbance at Monaghan. Unopposed candidates are Professors Thirft and Alton, and Sir James Craig, Independents for Dublin University, and the Speaker. Mr. Fahy. Mr. E. de Valera headed the Clare poll with an increased majority of 6000. .Mr. Sean Lemass. Minister of Industry and Commerce, is elected for Dublin City South. \ Those elected for Dublin North are: Mr- O’Kelly (Fiannaite), 17,053; the Lord Mayor, Mr. Byrne (Independent), 14,477; and Mr. Mulcahy (Cosgraveite), 8864. He polled 4000 fewer votes than at the last election. * The Fianna Fail elected members include Mr. Maguire and Mrs. Concannon, a woman novelist, and Mr. McGilligan, a Cosgraveite, for the National University. A severe blow was tjie defeat of the Cosgraveite, the ex-Speaker, Mr. Hayes. Those elected also include: Wicklow, Mr. Moore (de Valera Party), and The O’Mahony (Cosgrave Party); Wexford. Mr. Cornish (Labour). . The Dublin correspondent of the London “News Chronicle” says that unofficial returns of first preference votes indicate a clear over-all majority for Mr. de Valera. ~ , As a sample of election eve propaganda, Mr. de Valera’s organ, the “Irish Press.” published a page of world-wide good wishes, including a three-column facsimile of the Wellington Irish Republican Association’s cable: “Irish race in New Zealand wish you a sweeping victory.”’ ’ ’ PRO-TREATY SET-BACK Press Interpretation (Received Jan. 26, 11.55 p.m.) London, Jan. 26. As the Irish election results only began to be announced at midnight there was no Press comment in London, but the headlines show that they are regarded as a set-back for the protreaty parties. Some Dublin reports already forecast a clear majority for Mr. de Valera. The “Daily Mail’s” Dublin correspondent says that the first results suggest that the Cosgraveites suffered from the activities of the New Centre Party. So far none of the latter have been elected.
