870 TONS OF STRING.
According to the latest statistics tuc British Post Office used 870 tons of string in 1932, and it is stated that if the public tied their parcels more efficiently rhe string bill might be halved. Other items of expenditure included 167,000 telegraph poles and 306.00 b wooden arms; 2,553,500 insulators, 4400 telephone kiosks, 3000 coin , collecting boxes, 205,000 automatic machines, 750 telephone installations, 4200 bicvcles, 1400 motor vehicles. 89,216.000 lead seals, 1,397,750 yards of canvas fur mail bags, and miles of white tape! Every year the post office has. to provide by way of equipment for its staff 1,362,750 garments, 523,500 yards ol cloth, 55,750 waterproof coats, and 10,200 special outfits for motor-drivers.
