DUMPING OF RUBBISH

Picknickers at Eastbourne PROTEST BY COUNCIL A protest against the practice of visiting picnickers leaving rubbish on the Muritai Recreation Ground was voiced by Councillor E. N. Battersby at. the Eastbourne Borough Council, last night. “Far too many of the picnickers leave a heap of-rubbish on the recreation ground and we do not get a penny piece,” he observed. “It is not a fair thing that the recreation ground should be made a dumping ground by picnic parties. I would suggest that the council erect three or four rubbisih receptacles on the ground.” • “I do not helieve in trying to drive people away from Eastbourne,” remarked the Mayor, Mr. S. F. Fisher, “but I agree with the suggestion. I would like to see the recreation ground full on Saturdays and Sundays.” Councillor E. W. Wise thought that notices should also be erected. Councillor Battersby mentioned that a danger had been introduced by the large number of broken bottles on the beach and the recreation grounds. He knew of an instance wl;ere a boy had received severe cuts frdm broken bottles. Councillor W. F. Hornig was of opinion that all persons found leaving broken bottles on the. beach should be prosecuted without warning. The council decided to erect, the receptacles. if possible before the end of the week.
