Arrested on Wednesday afternoon on. a charge of damaging gas meters to the value of £4, the property of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board, a youn"- man, whose name was suppressed, appeared before Mr. T. Potts, J.P., in the Petone Police Court yesterday, and was remanded to appear on February 1. Bail was fixed at £2O.

Shortly after 2 o’clock yesterday morning, the Petone police discovered that attempts had been made to break into the tobacconist shops of Mr. Maurice Trower, 79 Jackson Street, and Mr. Archibald Merriless, 345 Jackson Street. Entry was not effected in either case.

“There is very much less ragwort in the borough now than eight years ago,” remarked the Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. W. T Strand, at the Borough Council meeting, when it was decided to draw the attention of the River Board to ragwort, which was alleged to be growing on the board's property.

The Eastbourne Borough Council held its first meeting for the current year last night, the mayor, Mr. S. F. Fisher, presiding. There were present Crs. E. N. Battersby, A. Magill, A. Varney, W. F. Hornig, A. Walker, C. A. Rendle, and E. W. Wise. No action was taken in regard to a letter from the Petone Borough Council dealing with the promoting of legislation which concerned the artesian water supplies in the Hutt Valley. The opinion was expressed by some councillors .that the addition of artesian wells had diminished the flow from the existing wells. To prevent damage to scenic reserves the following were appointed honorary rangers for a period of twelve months: — Messrs. W. J. Thomson, W. Jones, H. Rudolph, R. W. Miles, L. D. Bridge, H. G. Palmer, and W. Baker. A motion of sympathy to Constable R. D. Squire, who was injured in an accident, was carried unanimously.

UNEMPLOYED DECLINE Registration Figures Substantial decreases are recorded in the unemployed registrations ju Hutt Valley borough, with the exception of Upper Hutt, where there is,an increase of one. Petone shows a decrease of 25, and Lower Hutt shows 23. _ With a total of 630, Petone registrations comprise 68 single men, 204 married men with no children, 148 married men with one child, 92 married men with two children, and 118 married men with three or more children. Work is being allocated to 580 men. Registrations at Lower Hutt amount to 827, which is made up of 69 single men, 221 married men with no children, 197 married men with one child, 157 married men with two children, and 183 married men with three or more children. A total of 797 men are receiving work. There are 297 registered unemployed at Upper Hutt. Registrations comprise 77 single men and 220 married men. CLOTHES FOR UNEMPLOYED Drive to be Held at Petone Beginning at 2 p.m.. a clothes drive will be conducted by the Smith Family throughout the Petone district on Saturday. The Petone Smith Family has received many heavy calls, and every assistance is needed to carry on with the work. Many motorists have offered the use of their cars, and these are being detailed to cover various districts, accompanied by Boy Scouts, to collect the parcels. The Smith Family would be gratefu) if parcels were left on the door steps, and if shoes were tied together and their sizes marked. Every effort is being made to ensnire a successful drive, and the local unemployed should benefit considerably.

HUTT PERSONALS Miss Claudia Weston, Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. J. T. Martin, at Muritai. Mrs. Gordon Blaxall, Invercargill, and her daughter, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. Blaxall, Eastbourne. Mrs. H. Jowett and family, of “Glenwood,” Eastbourne, have returned from a holiday at Nelson and the Sounds. Mrs. F. Whiteman, Miss J. Whiteman, and Mr. R. Bradley. Upper Hutt, have returned from a holiday at Paraparaumu. Mr. and Mrs. J. Jarvie and family, Upper Hutt, have left for a motoring tour of the North Island.
