Women Teachers

Sir, —I should very much like to know who appoints school teachers —the Education Board or the school committees? I can. name several married woman teachers whose husbands are receiving good salaries. Others possess dairy farms and are milking herds of cows. I think their wives would be better assisting their husbands instead of teaching for, pin money and depriving others who are adapted to teaching and more deserving of the positions. Some of these cases have been going on for a few years, and the Education Board and its inspectors must be well aware of them. It is no credit to the Education Board when so many qualified teachers are on the unemployment list. — I am, etc., » LIVE AND LET LIVE. Eketahuna, January 24. [Appointments are made by the Education Boards in conjunction with the senior inspector of the district. Under recent legislation the boards are empowered to dismiss married women teachers whose husbands are able to provide for them. Teachers so dismissed may appeal, but can only succeed if hardship is proved.]
