Mr. David McCaig CAREER AS MARINE ENGINEER The death is reported from Glasgow at the age of S 9 of Mr. David McCaig, marine engineer, and one time superintending engineer for the Union Company at Sydney. . . Mr. McCaig served his apprenticeship to the engineering in Glasgow, and came out to New Zealand as chief engineer of the Rotomahana in 1579, and served subsequently in charge of the engine-room departments of a number of the company’s well-known passenger vessels, including the Mararoa, Moana, Mokoia, and old Monowai. He was chief engineer of the Monowai when that.vessel was engaged as a transport during the South African War. He was appointed superintending engineer for the company at Sydney in 1903, and retired from the service in 1911 when he went home to. Glasgow, where he had resided practically. ever since. Two nephews are in the service of the Union Company, Mrj Neil McCaig, chief engineer of the Monowai, and Mr. David McCaig, chief engineer of the Niagara. The late Mr. McCaig was a member of the New Zealand Institute of Marine and Power Engineers, for .50 years. He obtained his first class Board of Trade Certificate in 1871. Rev. H. J. Fletcher The Rev. 11. J. 'Fletcher died at New Plymouth recently, at the age of 64 years. A native of Kent, England, the late Mr. Fletcher came to New Zealand with, his parents In 1875, the family settling at Bulls. Mr. Fletcher became interested in the Maori race, and commenced Maori mission work In that'district. He subsequently spent many years in the Taupo and Urewera districts. In 1923 Mr. Fletcher left Taupo” and has sinqp been engaged in work at Turakina, .Wanganui, and Normaby, and Seacliff and Warrington, Otago. Mr. Fletcher was a noted Maori scholar, and an authority on Maori lore. ..He was a member of the New Zealand Astronomical Society, and the Polynesian Society, and was a contributor to the “Polynesian Jour-’ nal.” The late Mr. Fletcher is survived by his widow, three sons, and five daughters. , ' ' Mr. D. Pryde Mr. David Pryde, yybo won the New Zealand golf championship 35 years ago, died suddenly in Wellington on Sunday, at the age of 72. ‘ The late Mr. Pryde was born in Scotland, and came to New Zealand as a young man, starting in business as a jeweller in Wellington. In 1903 he .went to Feilding, where he established a business. He was one of the founders of the Feilding Golf Club, and won the local championship several years in succession. He was elected to the Fielding Borough Council fifteen years ago, and was chairman of the Reserves Committee for a considerable period. Mrs. Pryde died five years ago. and there are two daughters, Miss Isabel Pryde and Mrs. T. Coveney (Wellington), and one son, Mr. David Pryde. The funeral took place at Feilding. Mr. C. L. Daniel. • Mr. Cecil Leigh Daniel, who died at Rotorua recently, was well . known throughout Napier lW and more particularly in Feilding. He was the son of the late Wm. B. Daniel, of Norwich, Englund, a Church of England minister. and although a prominent architect, took up bush land at Feilding. and spent many years farming there. Some years ago he retired and settled at Poraite, where he married about four years ago. Mrs. Mary Jones The death occurred recently of Mrs. Mary Jones, widow of the late Mr. P. ,C. Jones, an Auckland and .Napier engineer, at the age of 75. Mrs. Jones was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Kennedy, and was born in Wellington. Her father came to New Zealand with the 65th Regiment. She is survived by three daughters and four sons, Mrs. T. Hanron, Taumarunui; Mrs. Turner, Hataitai; Mrs. Daly, Christchurch; Mr. A. H. Jones, Auckland; Mr. F. Jones, Christchurch 1 ; Mr. E. Jones and Mr. P. Jones, Napier. Mr. J. E. Espie The death is announced by a Gisborne Press Association message of Mr. John Edward Espie, aged 86, the oldest male person born in Poverty Bay. The late Mr. Espie’s father was one of the first five settlers in this district, arriving in 1836, and for many years he conducted a model stud sheep farm.
