RETIRING TEACHERS

Farewelled by Board The Wellington Education Board yesterday farewelled three headmasters of city schools who are retiring. They were: Mr. S. H. Eerguson, headmaster of Wadestown School; Mr. W. E. Hird, headmaster of Te Aro School; and Mr. S. Duncan, headmaster of Tawa Flat School. The chairman of the board. Mr. T. Forsyth, said that Mr. Eerguson had had 41J years’ service as a teacher. He had started in 1888, and had held the position of assistant master at the Thames Central School from 1916 till 1920, and a similar position in the Napier Street School, Auckland, from 1920 till 1923. He had been appointed headmaster of the Wadestown School on April 9, 1923, and had held that post until his retirement. Mr. Hird had had a total service of 40 J years, during which he had been headmaster of the Patea District High School from 1916 till 1921, headmaster of the Taihape District High School from 1921 until 1929, and headmaster of Te Aro School for the past three years. Mr. Dunean had been teaching for 33 years, having been assistant master at Waikanae, Worser Bay, and Berhampore, find had been appointed headmaster at Tawa Flat on May 23, 1932. Mr. Forsyth said that the three retiring headmasters had done signal service in the cause of education, and the board regretted that it was losing three such experienced teachers at the zenith of their ripe experience. He wished them all success in their well-earned leisure. Mr. T. W. McDonald and Mr. D. McCallum also added their congratulations. The three teachers thanked the members of the board for their kindly references to their services.
