The Mayor said lie would communicate witli the Labour Department, and asked the men to wait until the end of the week for developments. Some of the men agreed to this. Later, a deputation waited on the executive of the Palmerston North Hospital Board, with a similar request. One speaker said a good number of men. were on the verge of starvation. They' were willing to work, but they could not get it. They must- have’ food. It was only natural. Camps in the district were full, but some of the men had been allowed to go back temporarily. “Four hundred single men are in a desperate position,” said Mr. J. de Cleene, chief spokesman for the deputation. “I will tell you, and lam not going to beat about the bush, that things are moving. You must understand the position. Single men cannot go on much longer.” A telegram was sent to the Unemployment Board this afternoon asking for immediate relief. The telegram pointed out that there were no vacancies in the camps, and no provision was being made for the men’s sustenance.
