BIG QUAKE FEARED
Frequent Tremors in Burma Calcutta, Jan. 23.' Frequent earth tremors at Htawgaw, on the Sino-Burmese frontier, are believed to presage the opening of an old volcano in Upper Burma. Htawgaw is on a hill of decomposed granulite, formerly the site of a fort which was shaken to bits in 1929 and abandoned. Thirty shocks daily are occurring, but as the neighbouring villages consist of thatched bamboo huts, little notice is taken. The origin is traced to a fault in the Lagwi Pass, twenty miles away. It is believed to be associated with tremors in Dhubri, Assam. It is thought likely that a large scale earthquake threatens the localities.
