DISPLAY OF STOCK

Horowhenua Show Opens IN IDEAL WEATHER Principal Awards Made Dominion Special Service. Levin, Jan. 24. Favoured with brilliant sunshine, the Horowhenua Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s twenty-seventh annual show' was commenced on the Lovin .Showgrounds to-day. Although the entries in the stock classes showed an appreciable decrease, the quality of the exhibits was, on the whole, more than maintained. This year’s entries in the horses, competitions, cattle, pigs and sheep classes total 407, as against 648 for last year. Home industries’ classes have also dropped considerably, but (his is offset by an increase of 70 in the schools’ division.

As usual, there was a very strong display in the Jersey classes, entrigs in this section being only two below those for last year. The dairy cattle classes were also well supported, the next strongest division being the Milking Shorthorns. The Romney Marsh classes drew the largest entries in the sheei) section. To-day’s chief activities were centered on the judging of all the stock classes and the afternoon’s ring competitions. Tomorrow, when the show will conclude, the championship hack and pony will bo judged, following which there will be the annual grand parade and a further selection of ring events. JUDGES’ COMMENTS MILKING SHORTHORNS. Undoubtedly the most interesting of all the awards iii the cattle classes was that of the female championship in the milking Shorthorn classes, the blue ribbon being awarded to R. V. Brown's Waimea Tiki in preference to the same exhibitors Waimea Domingo, the dam of Waimea Tiki, and the winner of 29 championships, including two Royal Cohampionships, within the past four years. Mr. J. Heat-Bey. the judge, spoke very highly; of Waimea liiu, stating that it was easily the best of its breed he had sefin for years. :and m displacing its own mother it had made an auspicious start in the show ring. Another of R. V. Brown's exhibits that earned the judge's favourable comment, was' Birkland Roval Briton, the champion bull, aged two years. “This bull,” .said Mr. Hearsay, “is an outstanding animal tu.it should win many more championships in years to come.” Another worthy exhibit was XV. J. Slack’s yearling beifer, an animal typical of the breed, and already manifesting outstanding characteristics THE JERSEYS. The Jersey cow classes wore all represented by typical specimens of the breed, stated Mr. H. R. Benbow, the judge. The champion cow, Braeside Dawn, exhibited by R. L. Horn and Son, was a prolific championship winner, and one of the best of its breed in the North Island. There was little’ to choose between the other entries in the aged cow class. The’aged bull class was also a strong one, m qtialitv if not in number, the clianipioi. bull. GriHitli Uros.’s Kimberley Golden Glou’l would, in the judge's opinion, hold lus own in most show rings. The two-year-old bulls constituted another good class', but the yearling bulls and heifers were not *r. the best of condition, this being due to the dry season. The prize-winners in the yearling heifer class were excellent Jerseys, and would, compare favourably with others of their breed in any part of too Dominion. THE ROMNEYS. Mr. E. E. Short, the Romney Marsh judge, stated that his section was well up. to standard, the quality being even throughout. Interesting and unu.s'iial awards were made with the championships, both of which went to two-tooths. PIGS. Mr. J. A... Russell, who adjudicated in all* the pig classes, regretted the paucity of entries in his division, stating that the quality, on the average,, was fair, and not as good as last year's pig classes, which, admittedly, were exceptionally high. The Tamworth classes were the best this year, with Some attractive exhibits among the porkers and bacon pigs. SOUTHDOXVNS. The Southdown entries were not numerous, but. included two notable entries in the imported ram and ewe ehaitipionsliip winners, owned by J. 11. Slack,. These two animals were exceptionally fine specimens of’ their breed, ami, in the opinion of the judge, Mr. S. .1. Goul ter, would be hard to beat anywhere. On tiio whole, the quality wits’good, but in some cases the sheep shown were not sufficiently low set and the woo] was not fully true to type. FAT SHEEP. The fat sheep, judge, Mr. K. Deigiiton, stated that the quality lu bis-classes was quite good, although entries numerically bad been doubtless affected by the prolonged dry Wfiather. The feeding classes were the best, the sheep and lambs that won the major awards being quite up to show-ring standard.
