BARQUE JOSEPH CRAIG. The figurehead of a female figure, taken from the wrecked barque Joseph Craig, lias been received by Commander E. E. Berthon, officer in charge of the Devonport (Auckland) Naval Base, .from Mr. J. Wark, of Kohukohu, Jlokialiga, who some time ago saved it froth being burned us firewood. It is now being restored by the carpenter and painter of 11.M.5. Philomel, and will be added to the interesting collection of ships’ figureheads ranged round the grass plots at the base. The Joseph Craig was an iron barque of 751 tons, and her original name was Dunblane. She was built at Glasgow in 187$. The vessel was purchased in 190 S by J. J. Craig, Limited, and her name was then changed from Dunblane to Joseph Craig. About six mouths before she was wrecked—at Hokianga in 1914 —she was purchased by the Ilttd-dart-l’arker Company, which intended to run the vessel in the intercolonial coal, produce, and timber trade for a few months, and then convert her into a coal hulk. She had the reputation of being otic of the smartest vessels sailing from Auckland, and she made several fast passages between New Zealand and Australia.
