National Flower Show

Sir, —Your correspondent, P. E. Allen, has rushed into print with a lot of inaccuracies on a subject that he does not understand. Fie is not a member of the Wellington Horticultural Society, and consequently is unaware of the instructions issued to our delegates prior to the first meeting of the National Show Committee, and further, he has only recently been appointed a member of the latter comm Mr?'Allen is inaccurate 'in stating that the Town Hall was selected because the National Committee was assured that ample space was available. As a niatter of fact as soon as the show was decided upon the Town Hall aud Concert Chamber were selected by the National Committee Had it been otherwise my society would not have joined m. because we did not consider the time, opportune to launch a show in the Winter bbow Building for very good financial reasons. Mr. Waugh was fully aware ct this decision because he was present when tne delegates were instructed as above. Mr. Allen is again inaccurate in saying that it was impossible to stage the exhibits in the Town Hall, Concert Chamber and environs, as the public will be able to judge for themselves on Thursday and Friday next. . lie is again unfortunate in stating that it was later decided unanimously to hold the show in the Winter Show Buildings, as such was not the case. Ihe decision was the result of a catch vo *? the presentation of a plan by hir- ''aUnUImmediately after the meeting and following an inspection of the V> inter bhow Building, I personally called a special meeting of the committee of my society, when it was decided to ask four delegates of the National Show Committee to meet our four delegates immediately tn conference. This was done, and the outcome was that the chairman and another who were both disinterested persons were asked to see the Town Hall as well as the Concert Chamber, etc., and to report to a committee meeting as to whether my society’s plans fully covered the position. This inspection was made, and the tw’o gentlemen reported that the Town Hall and precincts offered the necessary space, and that meeting again affirmed that the show should be in thei low n Hall. All were asked to work for the full success of the show, and all have done so, Mr society contends that the locale of the Town Hall is infinitely preferable to that of the Winter Show building, and especially so in difficult times like the present. It has never changed its attitude since the first meeting in connection with the show, and Mr. Maugh has been full.v conversant with same right throughout, including the period when ne supervised the printing of the schedules on which the Town Hall and Concert Chamber were dearly stated. I would remind Mr. Allen that whether a show is held in the -town Hall or otherwise in the city, it in no way alters its status as a national show or “,- wise That is determined by the nature of the exhibits aud where they come from.-I am. etc, President. Wellington Horticultural Society. Wellington, January 24.
