About People and Events TASMAN FLIGHT PRIZE The winner of the competition for estimating the correct time for the crossing of the Tasman Sea by the Southern Cross is Mr. E. King, 215 Vivian Street, whose estimate was 14 hours 5 minutes 29 seconds. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith has made a signed statement that the time was 14 hours 5 minutes 30 seconds. There were nine tickets in which the time given was •between 14 hours 5 minutes and 14 hours 6 minutes. Special Meeting City Council. A special meeting of the City Council will be held to-morrow at 4.30 p.m. to confirm special loan resolutions passed at a special meeting of the council on December 22. Mount Victoria Tunnel Repairs. During the next few evenings a gang will be engaged in treating the surface of the Jlount Victoria traffic tunnel. The tunnel will be closed from 11 p.m. until 6 a.in. from to-night until next Friday. Fall Off Fence. Falling from a fence yesterday afternoon, William Coburn, aged 9, living at 20 Pitt Street, Wadestown, dislocated his left elbow. After receiving attention from Dr. Young he was taken to the hospital by the Free Ambulance. Car in Garden. Left unattended yesterday afternoon, a small car ran down Wright Street, across Wallace Street,, and crashed through a fence into a private garden. The runaway was considerably damaged. . Club House Broken Into. Between 7 and 9.30 on Monday evening the club house on the Shandon golf links was broken into, entry being gained by the forcing of a door. The intruder was surprised by the return of the caretaker, but made good his escape. It is not known yet whether anything was taken. The police are investigating. Fire in Lower Hutt. Fire was discovered in a four-roomed house in Connolly Street, Lower Hutt, about 9.30 o’clock last evening. The building, which is owned by Miss Phyllis Connolly, was unoccupied at the time. Miss Connolly being on holiday. The rear portion of the house was severely damaged. 21-ton Transformers. For installation in the Melling substation, four high transformers, each weighing about 21 tons, arrived from Auckland on the Port Waikato yesterday. They were formerly in use at the Penrose sub-station to step down the power from Horahora from 50.000 volts to 6600 volts. Long Bicycle Ride. A long-distance bicycle tour was undertaken recently by a Wellington boy, Michael Young. Leaving here on the Sunday morning, he reached Wanganui at 8.30 that night and New Plymouth at 6 p.m. on the Monday. He averaged 12 miles per hour for the journey. While in New Plymouth lie and a party from Auckland were lost while attempting to reach the summit of Mount Egmont. The return journey from New Plymouth occupied 24 days. The Soft Answer. Thre were some ironical smiles at the Lower Hutt Borough Council meeting last night when Mr. A. Anderson drew attention to the first letter on the . minutes of the. previous meeting, ; in which the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. i G. W. Forbes, acknowledged the receipt of. the council’s protest against the raising of the exchange rate, and promised to give the council’s request full consideration. “It is all rather .amusing,” observed Cr.
