The Napier aero pageant, held on Saturday afternoon, was an outstanding success The presence of the GovernorGeneral and the Lady Bledisloe, and of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, attracted a large attendance. Before the pageant commenced their Excellencies had a flight over the city in the Southern Cross, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith being congratulated by the Governor-General on the Tasman flight. Napier was a blaze of light on Saturday night, large crowds filling the streets till a late hour. The results of the band contest are as follow-Quickstep, B grade: Napier Citizens’ Band, 1; Carterton Silver Band, 2. C grade: Palmerston North Garrison Band, 1; Napier Technical. 2; Kaponga Band, 3. HOSPITAL BLOCK OPENED Tribute from Lord Bledisloe Dominion Special Service. Napier, Jan. 23. The Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, in opening the new administrative block at the Napier Hospital' to-day, spoke of the gallant self-forgetting deeds of the nurses, and the cool daring of the doctors when operating outdoors an hour after the catastrophe overwhelmed the hospital as it did the rest of Napier. Lord Bledisloe, who, it will be remembered, with the Lady Bledisloe, stood on the present site of the administrate block a few hours after the earthquake, drew a picture of the scenes they witnessed, chief among which was the medical men coolly conducting operations upon those whose futures relied upon immediate attention.

“I am happy in the recollection that your splendid nursing staff on that oc-

casion, regardless of the question of their own safety, thought first, indeed only, of the patients under their charge,” said his Excellency. His Excellency unveiled tablets to the memory of the nurses killed and injured in the earthquake on February 3, 1931, and paid a tribute to the subsequent noble work of those who survived. His Excellency said he and the Lady Bledisloe had toured around Napier this morning and found a new Napier with architecture as attractive as its widened streets. A happy impression was the simple dignity and tasteful colouring and homogeneity in design in the neWlyerected structures. Despite leaden skies, the gay spirit m evidence on Saturday was unquenehed. The Marine Parade, with its gorgeous flowers and green lawns, was complementary to many forms of amusement. The Dominion-wide athletic meeting, the monster Red Cross ball, and their Excellencies’ attendance have, flooded the town with animation. Visitors from all over New Zealand had poured into the citv since Thursday. , Many of the visitors affirm that the carnival ,is the most successful seen for years. > A number of athletes from outside centres competed in the Napier carnival athletic meeting this evening, most of the visitors being from Canterbury. The 100 yards handicap was won by McFarland (Canterbury), off 4yds., in 9 4-o sec., while he secured second place. in the’22o yards, the winnes’s time being 914-ssec.’ Matthews won the mile off siratch in 4.32. The BSO yards was won bv Ell (Canterbury), off 35yds., in 1.59, while the short limit handicap over the same distance went to Broadway (Canterbury). off scratch, in 1.591-0. The second place in the pole vault was filled bv Mulvev (Canterbury) from scratch with a jump of 10ft. 4in. The half-mile medley relay resulted in Canterbury being placed first from Napier, the time being 1.13.

SECOND DAY’S EVENTS

The second day of the carnival was held in fine but somewhat cold weather to-day. A large number of visitors were again in evidence. The Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe. and the Lady Bledisloe again had a round of duties to perform, being occupied with the opening of the Napier Society of Arts and Crafts, pictorial history of Napier, and the official opening of the rebuilt Napier Hospital, while this evening their Excellencies attended the Red Cross ball.

Other events held during the day included athletic sports and a concert. In the course of his remarks at the hospital, his Excellency stated how attractive he and Lady Bledisloe had found the architecture of the New Napier. with its wide streets and impression of simple dignity, tasteful colourings. and the homogenity of design in the newly-erected structures.
