Railway Buffet Charges

Sir, —I had occasion to make a journey by rail last week and on this journey I needed refreshment. At a station I called for a cup of tea and a sandwich. To my great surprise the charge for this was Bd, and as there was no other place to obtain anything, I had perforce to pay. As a caterer and supplier of many years standing I know that the cost of the material supplied, at present market values, would be lid; add to this overhead and service, 2Jd, which, in my opinion, is ample, and we have a total of 4d. As I see it this is a monopolised trading concern which is exploiting the travelling publie, and why it has not been brought to light, before is beyond my .comprehension. Compare the state of affairs by road travel—any tea room will supply a pot of tea and a plate of very nice sandwiches for the same amount. Without egotism I make bold to say that I could give the same refreshment and service to the travelling public for the sum of -Id and still make a profit.— I am, etc., OBSERVER. Wellington, January 23.
