PLUNKET SHIELD

Wellington Now Faces a 255-Run Gap

AUCKLAND’S SOUND REPLY

By Telegraph.—Press Association.

Auckland,. Jan. 23,

The third day’s play iu the Pluuket Shield match, Auckland v. Wellington, ended with the game in a most interesting position. At stumps Auckland was 200 ahead with one wicket in hand. The wicket may show signs of wear to-morrow, although it played easily to-day. The weather was again gloriously fine. ■Wellington had little difficulty in securing a first innings lead. Parsloe went l.b.w. when three runs were needed, and Newman placed his side ahead. James went on to pass an excellent century in 16S minutes —his first on Lden Park. He was caught at mid-on when attempting a forcing on shot. The last two wickets added only 17. Auckland made a disastrous start in the second innings, Postles going l.b.w. when the total was 15. In the last over before lunch Mills fell to a palpable trap, hitting Freeman’s first ball —a blatant full toss—to Lamasou at deep leg.

Newman in Good Form. After lunch Newman had a most effective bowling spell, maintaining perfect length and spinning baek appreciably. He dismissed IVeir, Vivian, and Caere m rapid succession. Weir played ovtr t^ e top of a straight ball, and Vivian was bowled by a perfect length ball which came in to take the off stump. Dacre was out to a smart one-hand catch by the bowler. ~ In a fine fighting partnership Whitelaw and Bush added 69 invaluable runs. The former gave a difficult chance to James off Blundell when he had scored two, but went on to give his finest display in representative cricket. His off and cover driving and square cutting was exceptionally clean and stylish. He batted for 151 minutes, and was bowled while attempting to play across a break leg spinner from Freeman. Bush dragged Freeman on the wicket shortly after tea, and Matheson skied an easy catch to James when he appeared to be settling down. Bush had played a fine fighting innings at a critical stage. Another valuable partnership followed between Pearson and Garrard, both of whom attacked the tiring bowling. Garrard followed his successful bowling with some particularly vigorous hitting. lie was dismissed l.b.w. after the partnership had added 99. Hampton played out the final over.

Wellington Attack M’eakens. "Wellington’s bowling slumped badly after Newman’s fine spell. Blundell was dangerous at times, and Freeman required watching, but later batsmen found no terrors in the attack and fully redeemed the failure of the first innings. The visitors’ fielding reached a high standard. Dempster and Blandford were outstanding, and James kept wickets brilliantly. His appeals against 'Whitelaw and Garrard were answered in the negative. Interesting cricket, with the prospect of a close finish, is expected to-morrow. Details: — AUCKLAND. First Innings 366 Second Innings. A. ,T. T’ostles, 1.b.w., b. Parsloe 12 J. E. Jlills. e.
