Melbourne, Jan. 22.
Prior to the game with the M.C.O. team at Ballarat yesterday, a letter from the Board of Cricket Control was read to-the Ballarat players forbidding leg theory bowling. The Instructions were obeyed throughout the innings. Replying to adverse criticisms at luncheon, the English captain, D. R. Jardine, said it was not his place to
debate the leg theory. He asked them to see how many times Larwood hit the wickets. Barrackers were always crying “Bowl on the wicket,” therefore they should consider Larwood’s record in this respect. CONTROVERSY AT HOME Sympathy, for Australia London, Jan. 20. Columns of letters are appearing in the newspapers on the leg theory controversy, a surprisingly large number being sympathetic to the Australian viewpoint and contesting the statement that Gregory and MacDonald ever bowled the leg trap. Mr. J. 0/Squire, editor of the London Mercury,” breaks into verse in the “Evening Standard,” the . last two stanzas of which read: —
Where is that tough Australian grin? When, comrades, did you learn to
faint? Can you not take without complaint A dose of your own medicine? Finish this futile brawl to-day. We won’t believe the paradox— A whining Digger funking knocks— Come on, one up and two to play.
