JOCKEYS IN TROUBLE

L. J. Ellis Suspended J. BARRY CENSURED The judicial stewards o£ the Wellington Racing Club held long sessions oil Saturday in connection with inquiries into the running. At the end or the day the following announcements were made: The inquiry opened on Thursday into the riding of Tippling (J. Barry) in the Anniversary llandicap was concluded. Evidence was heard from Barry, Humphries (rider of Wise Choice), and F. Shaw, trainer of Tippling. The stewards considered that the riding was unsatisfactory, and as there was some interference, decided to give Barry the benefit of the doubt as to whether the horse was run on his merits, and to caution Barry s'everely under the circumstances.

The judicial stewards, after hearing the evidence of all the riders involved, ure satisfied that the falling of La Poupee in the January Handicap was due to the horses on the outside and La Poupee being squeezed in. The evidence clearly pointed to the rider of Hula Belle (L. J. Ellis) being to blame for crossing, and accordingly it was resolved that L. J. Ellis be suspended for 14 days for careless riding. The stewards regretted that one of the most experienced of the riders, R. Reed, was apparently unable to assist the committee by giving any useful evidence as to his observations in connection with the incident. NAPIER PARK Weights for Carnival Meeting
