N.Z. Women’s Championship to Mrs. Caldow

Six finals were decided at the Dominion croquet tournament at Lower Hutt and Petone on Saturday. The weather was dull and overcast, but the rain held off and conditions were not unpleasant. Finalists gave exhibitions of excellent croquet, Mr. 11. P. Stratton in particular playing faultlessly. Throughout the tournament visitors have been lavish in their praise of the greens, which were in splendid condition for scientific croquet. Hartnell beat Mrs. Tingey. 26—11, 26—3; IL P. Stratton beat Mrs. Bartlett, 26-17, 26—23. Semi-final. Mrs. 'Watkins beat A. G. F. Boss, Al—l 7, 26—10. Handicap Singles. Final. Mrs. Kibblewhite beat Mrs. Bassett, 26—21. Handicap Doubles. Final. Mrs. H. Managh and Mrs. Bartlett beat Mrs. Tingey and Mrs. Clark, 26—20. The final of the Dominion open championship will be played at Riddlford Park at 10.30 this morning between H. P. Stratton and Mrs. C. Watkins, both of Hawke's Bay. WELLINGTON EVENT Play Commences To-morrow The thirteenth annual tournament of the Wellington Croquet Association will commence to-morrow at 9.30 a.m. on Kelburn lawns, where the official ceremony will take place. Play will continue throughout the day in the handicap doubles event. The Alt. Victoria, Hataitai, and Wellington lawns are to be used as well as those of Kelburn. The tournament is under the management of Mrs. E. McKenzie, and the official referee is Mrs. IV. !■’. Caldow, who is appointing a number of referees and umpires, to be in attendance at lhe different lawns. Mrs. E. Boocock, official handicapper, will also be in attendance to watch the progress of players, with an eye to future, adjustments in their handicaps. The tournament committee includes Mosdames K. Gardner. C. Scott, W. Bock. A. Ttamsay, Falder, W. Walker, Monks, Warner.
