NEWFOUNDLAND DEBT
English and Canadian Help
St. Johns, Newfoundland. Jan. 16. A recent agreement by Canada and the British Government, to advance the Newfoundland Government the necessary funds to meet interest charges on the Colony’s debt due this month has revived, discussion on the possibility of an ultimate merger with Canada A factor regarded here as likely to pave the way for a merger is a report on the auriferous formation in Newfoundland and Labrador. This has inspired the hope of increased colonial wealth which, from Canada’s point of view, would make Newfoundland a better bargain.
The loans extended to Newfoundland by the Unted Kingdom and Canada have not added to the likelihood of confederation with Canada, the Prime Minister (Mr. Alderdice) declared to-day, stating that the loans had no strings attached to them.
