Cyclist’s “Dangerous Fun”
•‘it was New Year’s Eve, mid 1 was just out for a bit of fun,” was the excuse offered by Lionel‘Herbert Doughty, aged 22. who pleaded.guilty in the Upper Hutt Police Court on Wednesday to a charge of driving a motor-cycle at a speed and in a ’manner .Which might be dangerous to the public. • - „ .“It was pretty• dangerous fun, ■ remarked Inspector J. ■E. Ainsworth, of the Main . Highways Board. f ■ . Defendant was fined £2 and costs by Messrs.' P.‘ D. Davis and J. IT. Benge, J.P.’s. Z ; In his evidence Inspector Ainsworth said that he had chased defendant-from Upper Hutt to Maori Bank, where he hid-quickly doubled on his tracks and re-' turned to Upper Hutt at nearly 50 m.p.h. The town was crowded with shoppers, and Doughty passed through at a . high speed. When finally stopped, his. reply was: “Next time I’ll have a better'bike and beat you.” A similar charge was preferred against Percy Coutts, who did not appear. He was convicted and fined £2 and costs. On a charge of failing to pay the heavy traffic fees, Peter Robertson, carrier, was convicted and ordered to pay costs. SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL Event on Petone Beach Profits for the Christmas and New Tear beach carnival held by the Petone Beautifying and , Foreshore Society amounted to more than £5O, reported the Mr. 0. Silbery, to the executive committee. Mr. J: W. McEwan pre--‘sided. The profit was considered very, satisfactory, as many showmen were unable to pay the rental. A vote of thanks and appreciation was passed to Mr. Silbery for the able way in which he had carried out his duties. A meeting will be held shortly to formulate plans of improvements to the
