AN OBSOLETE RANGE
Ways of Transforming It Now that so many large houses have been converted, it often happens that the old kitchen ranges are not needed because the cooking is done by gas or electricity. There are several ways in which these unused ranges may be disguised—which is a good thing, for they took unsightly if simply left as they are.
One method is to take out all the shelves, and have the range completely covered with plywood. Then have a vertical sheet of the plywood fixed some distance in front of the old back, and fix wooden shelves across this false back. Arrange chinaware on the shelves, and you will obtain an excellent imitation of a’small kitchen sideboard. Another way is to take out the iron shelves, and box over the lower part. Whitewash , the inside of the upper part of the grate, ’ thus making an al-cove-like recess, which will form a background for a big pottery jug of flowers.
