Diplomatic Chessboard STATUS OF AUSTRIA (Received Jan. 18, 11.45 p.m.) London, Jan. 18. The “Daily Telegraph’s” diplomatic correspondent says that the French Government has made a startling move on the diplomatic chess-board in connection with the international status of Austria. She proposes that Austria, like Switzerland, be recognised by the Powers as perpetually neutral, tills being guaranteed if possible by the League of Nations. Secret pourparlers on the subject are now proceeding with a view to averting the dreaded political union of Germany and Austria or an economic union of Austria and Italy. The “Daily Telegraph” points out that Austria, unlike Switzerland, is not self-contained economically, and possesses no easily defensible strategic frontiers. It is unlikely that Italy and Germany will acquiesce in the plan, which even realistically-minded French statesmen regard as Utopian.” h
