THE TERRAZZO WORK

i/N 01 - tlle most striking features of the New Napier is the extensive use of terrazzo in the majority of the business premises and hotel buildings, executed in various colours and designs to match the general colour scheme and architecture of the individual buildings. Decorative terrazzo work has, in recent years, fast grown in popularity in New Zealand, and the fact that its numerous advantages were duly appreciated by architects and owners alike in the reconstruction of Napier is evidenced by the numerous newly constructed buildings that have incorporated terrazzo as a covering for, and a relief to the.streotyped plain, tiled or coloured concrete. Not only in quantity, but also in quality, is the-terrazzo work in Napier outstanding, this being entirely due to the highly skilled workmen who have been employed in its manufacture and erection, and it may safely be said that Napier is a mode! to all other towns and cities in the Dominion in this respect. The outstanding installation in Napier is undoubtedly that of the Hotel Central, ■ which was executed by the Napier Terrazzo Company, the slabs and designs having been manufactured at the company's works in Milton Road, Napier, under the personal supervision of the proprietor, Mr. F. F. AVilcockson. The predominating colours in the terrazzo work on the hotel exterior are a combination of light green, cream, black and yellow to tone with the general colour scheme of the building, which Is of a very pleasing light green and cream. The exterior terrazzo work extends the full length of the building on both the Dalton and Emerson Streets frontages, and consists of a number of upright, piers dividing the shops. The terrazzo piers on each side of the main entrance to the hotel are inset with stay bright steel stripes, while the remainder of the piers are relieved with -black perpendicular insets. The stallboards under the shop window fronts are of mottled design in the same colours as the piers, except that the stripes are omitted. -Green terrazzo sides to the baths in the bath rooms beautifully match the green and white colour scheme and give the rooms an air of cleanliness and freshness.
