BOWLS TOURNEY

Rinks Sections Ended TWENTY-EIGHT QUALIFY Pairs Resume Play To-day BREAK IN WEATHER The two final rounds of section play in the rinks event of the New Zealand Bowling Tournament were played yesterday, when 28 rinks qualified for post-section playThere was a break in the weather, but this did not prevent play being resumed - on city greens, and the morning round of 25 heads was completed. The Hutt green was under water, and the section was transferred to Petone green, where two games of 21 heads were played. There were intermittent, showers in the (afternoon. The pairs event will be resumed today, and a start will be ma £ e . w ““ rinks post-section play, in which the games will all be of 21 heads, three games a day to be played. This will bo on the two-life principle, and any team losing two games will cease play. Several players with four lives failed to make good on the day, and two rinks which had not previously lost a game suffered two defeats, and one lost his last game only. Kerr (Onehunga) was the only unbeatable rink in the section play. Notes on Play. There are two Wilsons of Linwood, Christchurch, playing in different sections. H. Wilson, in section A, secured his sixth win, and qualified, while H. G. Wilson, in section G, won the morning game, and had tq win in the afternoon to qualify.. In section A at Seatoun Wilson, against Bull (Levin) scored 5, 2,1, 3, 3 in the first eight heads, and led 14-—6. _ The Levin man made a better fight of it then, and only lost by nine points. . There was heavy scoring m the Benefield (Wanganui) and Conder (Island Bay) encounter, the two rinks scoring 60 point, 34—26. Benefield wanted the win, for he had to win both games to qualify. About the halfway stage the Island Bay skip sent a bowl down on the wrong bias, a feat that was emulated by a well-known bowler later in the morning at a crucial stage. _ Reverting to the stern fight Bencneld had with McWhannell (Hataitai) the preceding day, it was recalled that Benefield had a hard tussle when he won the final of the, rinks at Auckland m 1921. He met the late Tom Stewart, of Dunedin club, in the final, and Stewart on the 13th head was leading 19 —7. When the last head was about to start Benefield was still two down. Wignt. his No. 3. drew the shot, and Benefield tried to draw another to make, the tie. One of the bowls was worth four if it was taken out. Stewart tried the running shot, and took out his own bowl to leave Wanganui lying four; Benefield drew a fifth, and Stewart drove with his last and missed. • • . , It looked as if Lawrie’s Lyall Bay rink had packed up when Lambert (Thorndon) led him at the halfway stage 17—11. On one head Lawrie was lying six when Lambert drew the shot dead. After the tea adjournment Lawrie's men found the green better, caught up. and., won by one on the last head. . . White (Hastings) took the lead at the start against McWhannell (Hataitai) and held it all the way through to win by seven thus putting Hataitai rink out of postsection play. , , , , • J . Smart (New Plymouth) had to win both games to Qualify, but whnt down in the first game to Harper (Otahuhu). Gray (Kelburn) secured his seventh successive win at Victoria, but only just got home against Mayo (Port Ahunri), who had to win both games, and so went out. Gray scored 4,1, 3 on the first three heads. : ■ , , Gilbert (Karori), by good team work, secured his sixth win to qualify against Robertson (Onehunga). London (Wangapui) beat Jones (Woburn)' bv seven. It was Judd, who took Cook’s place as No. 2 for Woburn, who put the kitty in the ditch the preceding day, and made it impossible to score further. leaving eight bowls un played on the head. A Stirring Finish. - There were some tense moments in the concluding stages of the game between J. Kerr (Onehunga) and Hain (Victoria). At the eighteenth head it looked as if Kerr had the game in his pocket,, but when Victoria scored 2, 3 and 4. it put them in the running again, and with 24 heads gone the score was 22—22. Hain was lying shot when Kerr with, his last bowl drew the shot dead, to win by a single. Although it is Hain’s rink. Ingram took over the positions of skip on Monday and carried on yesterday, Hutchisou (Dunedin), who needed two wins on the day to qualify, had to go for his life against Bary (Palmerston North). On the twenty-second head Bary took four ajjd made the score 23-all. Hutchison then scored a single, and Bary replied with three, leaving Hutchison two down with the last head to go. The Scotties then came to light .with good drawing, and scored four on the last head to win by two. j ' Another "Wrong ’Un.” Fielding’s Hataitai rink was on tenterhooks at .Wellington green in the concluding stages of the game with Noad (Lyall Bay). Feilding was four up with the last head to go, but in the last- head Noad was lying five. Halliday, No. 3 for Feilding. sent down his first bowl on the wrong bias, much to his perturbation, but the skip saved the situation by drawing second shot, and was content to allow Noad to take a single, still leaving him three to spare on the game. Another curious incident happened, on the Wellington lower v green. O’Donnell (Wellington) had struck the Skoglund drivers from Stratford, but would not allow themselves to get rattled by.the robust play. O’Donnell, however, decided on one head to give a specimen of his driving. He put up an express, caught the jack fairly and squarely, and drove it into the bank, where it stuck. instead of falling into the ditch. Had it dropped O’Donnell would have scored four, but as the jack was off the green the umpire declared it dead, and the bead was replayed. O’Donnell won his game to make five wins, but lost the afternoon game to Lomas (Kelburn), and so failed to qualify for post-section play. It was so hot at Kelburn on Monday that two members of the. junior Christchurch rink went and enjoyed a. shower bath in the pavilion at the lunch, interval. Not many bowling clubs provide members with shower baths. Dr. Marks Defeated. Dr. Marks (Christchurch) suffered a reverse in the seventh round from Hinchcliff (Caledonian). There were several ties in the game. 5—5 on the sixth head, 12 —12 on the fourteenth, 16—16 on the eighteenth, 19 —19 on the twenty-first, 20 —20 on the twenty-third, and on the twenty-fifth ended 21—21, so that an extra head had to be played. It was only decided by Hinchcliff with his last bowl, when he drew the shot to win by one point. . In the afternoon game against Bedell (Island Bay), Marks had to fight every inch of the way. On the opening beads Bedell got away smartly and led 10—-2. Marks then scored 1. 2,3, 4 in succession, anJ took the lead 12—10. Bedell then took hold of the bit. and on the fifteenth head secured the lead, 19—14. On the sixteenth head Marks scored seven, the second in the tournament, and went ahead by StUl°'fighting strongly on the heavy ■ rreen Bedell again altered the board, and ou tb’e twenty-third head Marks was two down On the last head Marks wanted three to tie and to win. £te lying two, and with his last bowl Just

failed to carry the jack to the back bowls, and lost 27—26. Bringans (Khandallah) made Maxwell Walker (Auckland) fight for his win in the morning, the score being 15 —15 on the 20th head. Walker’s rink then asserted itself, scoring three singles and a five to win by seven. Nancarrow (Thorndon) also gave the Aucklanders a fright in the afternoon, for at the halfway stage Walker only had the lead by one. Over the next few heads Walker increased the lead to 22—12, and finally won 29—24 to qualify for the post-section play. . Naylor (Lyall Bay), by defeating Turpin (Canterbury) in the afternoon game, succeeded in getting six wins, and quailIn the game Noad (Lyall Bay) v. Loutley (Levin) on Monday, Noad scored one on the first head, two on the second, three on the third, four on the fourth, and five on the fifth, 15 in all, a curious sequence of figures. Only Fives in Section D. Section D was the only one in which no rink qualified with six wins, and this brought in five rinks with five wins. They were Arnott (Palmerston North), Dee (Nelson), Lowry (Petone), . Ives (Christchurch) and Tucker (Victoria). In section E, Bringans (Khandallah) won the wooden spoon by losing all eight games, although three or four games were close finishes. Rendle (Eastbourne) defeated Martin (Hataitai) and secured seven wins. J. B. Reid (Lyall Bay) won both games yesterday and qualified with six wins, defeating Hughan (Carterton) in the second game. Hutchison (Dunedin) just got home against Hain (Victoria) in the afternoon and secured his sixth win. Kerr (Onehunga) won against MeKenzie (Opawa) and had eight wins. Lancaster (Carlton) suffered his first defeat in the last game, being beaten by Currie (Timaru). ■ Benefield (Wanganui) met Lawrie (Lvall Bay) in the eight round and both wanted to win to qualify. Benefidd won bv 33—26. In the same section H. Wilson (Linwood) secured his seventh win. Nash (Palmerston North) went out in the eighth round, while Priddle(lsland Bav) won his last game to qualify. Bolton (Victoria)-' qualified by beating Reid (Kaituna), who went out. Kerr (Onehunga) was the only one to come through section play unbeaten.
