Humid Wellington Day BREEZE CLEARS AIR Although heavy rain fell at Wellington yesterday, conditions were still humid. The downpours in the afternoon were tropical in intensity, the heavy soaking which they gave the ground being welcomed by gardeners. Many persons, who had to go out of doors, left their overcoats behind, depending upon umbrellas for shelter. The rain did not discourage swimmers, the beaches being just as crowded as on previous days. Toward late afternoon the rain ceased .and a cool northerly breeze sprang up. The night sky was cloudless and augured well for to-day. PALMERSTON WEATHER Dry Spell Still Prevails Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, Jan. 17. There was a heavy downpour of rain in the hills in the Aokautere district this morning, but little rain fell -in and around Palmerston North. In the Aokautere district the land was covered with water in a short time. The weather has been threatening throughout the district the past two days, and there have been thunderstorms in the ranges. A fall of 45 points of rain was recorded at Tiritea last night, but there was only a slight fall in this district this morning. The highest temperature recorded yesterday was 84 degrees in the shade. The temperature in the city this morning was 75 degrees at 9 o’clock and SI degrees at noon. The day was sultry and overcast. HEAT MOST OPPRESSIVE Conditions at Marton Marton. Jan. 17. A carefully checked and verified reading by an experienced meteorologist gave yesterday’s maximum reading in the shade as 92 degrees. The heat was most oppressive, and any breeze was also warm. The intense heat is partly attributable to the fact that Marton is situated on a high plateau. NINETY IN BLENHEIM By Telegraph.—Press Association. Blenheim. Jan. 16. The temperature yesterday was 90 degrees in the shade.
