FIRE IN CHURCH
Outbreak at Auckland By Telegraph—Press Auckland, Jan. 17. Fire, which broke out at the back of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Mount Albert, shortly after 9.30 to-night threatened for a period to gut the buildlug, which is entirely of wood. Good work by the Mount Albert brigade, however, confined the outbreak to the chancel and vestry, total damage being estimated at from £l5O to £2OO. The fire apparently originated near the steps leading to the vestry, but. the cause is unknown. The chureh had not been used for any service since Sunday evening. The vicar. Rev. R. G. Coats, and his family were away on holiday, but the temporary occupants of the vicarage next to the church had no suspicion of anything being amiss until they received a telephone message from a woman who had already broken the street alarm box. The Insurances, owing to the absence of the vicar, were not available.-
