MEETING OF COUNCIL Handicap Events Criticised Suggestions that the handicap events should be restricted or even eliminated at the Dominion croquet tournament, were made at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Croquet Council at Lower Hutt last night. The proposals were made by Mr. H. P. Stratton, who stated that more than half the time in the tournament was spent in handicap maches. In the opinion of the president, Mrs. H. Rhodas Williams, part of the trouble was caused by the fact .that the Dominion tournament, which was the "blue riband” croquet event of New Zealand, was not allocated at the correct time of the year. Many players entered the tournament unprepared. The remedy, thought the president, lay in holding the North and South Island and Dominion tournaments later in the'year to allow the district associations to hold their respective tournevs before the more important ones. This would give players an opportunity to get on form. Mr. Stratton considered that the championship matches should be played before the handicap events. One member intimated that such a system had recently been carried out at a tournament, and had been most strongly condemned. - The matter was held over. Mr. Stratton further suggested that the allocation of trophies to the South Island should be similar to those presented to the North Island, irrespective of the number of entries from either island, mid with this suggestion the president concurred. Tlie following members of the executive committee were present:—Mrs. H. Rhodes Williams (president) ; Captain Hartnell (vice-president) ; Mrs. W. 15. Caldow (official referee) ; Mr. A. G. F. Ross (hon. secretary, and Airs. C- Watkins (ofiicial handicapper). An apology was received from the hon. treasurer, Mr. C. k. Spooner. The balance-sheet for the past year showed a credit balance of £l9B/10/1, as compared with approximately £154 at the corresponding date last year. The executive committee was of opinion, however, that the increase would not recur in future years, even if the present improved metaods of collection were permanently adopted. A great deal of business was uncompleted last night, and the meeting will oe continued to-night.
