TERRIFYING SCENES
Trains Collide at Speed in Tunnel TEN KILLED, 15 INJURED Lucerne, Dec. 13. Ten passengers were killed and 15 were injured when an express, travelling at 50 miles an hour, crashed head on into a local passenger train travelling at 30 miles an hour in a tunnel. The driver of the express had ignored a signal. The engines were reduced to heaps of twisted steel and the drivers were killed. A through carriage conveying passengers to Germany was smashed. There were terrifying scenes in the darkness when passengers in the undamaged coaches attempted to rescue the injured imprisoned in the pile of wreckage filling the tunnel. The dead include five children of one family.
