TOO OLD AT 60 YEARS
Usual Theory Challenged
MAN’S CAPACITY FOR WORK
“Too old at 60?” One often hears that this is an accepted, axiom almost in every walk of life, indeed it is being made the retiring age in many branches of employment.
Such a computation of man’s capacity for work does not enter into the philosophy of Mr. W. H. Jackson, at one time acting headmaster of the Mount Cook Boys’ School, and who was headmaster at Masterton Central when he retired ten years ago. AV hen farewelling his successor at that school, Mr. R. C. Drummond, at the monthly meeting of the Education Board yesterday, Mr. Jackson recalled that Sir. Drummond had served under him as a pupil teacher at Mount Cook, and throughout his career he had kept-an eye on him, had noted the good work he had done at Lansdowne, and when he was asked whom he would like to succeed him at Masterton Central be had nominated Mr. Drummond knowing him to be the “right stuff.” In mentioning that Mr.' Drummond had plenty left in him yet, Mr. Jackson said that now on 75 years of age he was still a busy man. On the previous day he had supervised a university examination in the morning; in the afternoon he had delivered an address at the Wairarapa High School, and as chairman of th<? board of that school had distributed the prizes, trophies and certificates, after which he had stepped into his own motor-car, driven to Wellington, and had the same evening attended a meeting of the executive of the Wellington Education Board.
