ESPERANTO CLUB

Wellington Season Ends

On Tuesday evening the Wellington Esperanto Club terminated its year's work with a “breaking-up” night, and the celebration of the birthday anniversary of the founder of the international language, Dr. L. L. Zamenhof. The programme for the evening was an interesting one, the Golden Hula Orchestra, consisting of five performers with steel playing "The Hilo March,” “Aoba-oe,” “Drowsy Waters,” and “Hawaiian Hotel.” Joyce Leek, aged 5 years, gave an operatic dance and a Dutch clog dance. Mr. B. Potts, president of the club, gave a short address, outlining the wonderful genius of Dr. Zamenhof. who. as a boy. had conceived the idea of a world language, and by the age of nineteen had perfected his theories and produced that which time has proved to be a most, effective instrument for international communication. The speaker said that the world was fast recognising that Dr. Zamenhof had given a priceless gift to humanity, and sooner or later hi's name would take a leading place in the roll of great men. Mr. V. Leek described the hearty welcome he had received from Esperantists when visiting the Continent and England. On one occasion he lectured on New Zealand to a large audience in Austria, after which he had to answer many questions about New Zealand. Esperanto had opened the doors to many friendships, and while ordinary tourists had to be satisfied with regulated tours, he and his family bad been welcomed by the people io their homes.
