SPEEDY SPRINTER Tea Trader’s Track Record NOTES AND COMMENTS Cylinder Returns from Sydney RED SUN LEAVES,FOR WAIPA (By “Tho Watcher.”) Tea Trader on Tuesday morning was responsible for the best half mile ever run on the Takanini track. He conceded a start to a companion and beat him by two lengths in 47 2-5, Pillow Fight ran 48. Home Again. Cylinder, who was left in Sydney by J. H. Jefferd to be fired, has returned home. Goshawk is also back with J. M. Cameron's team at Hastings. Red Heckle’s Rider. L. J. Ellis will ride Red Heckle in the Akaroa Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday! Red Heckle has been galloping brilliantly since the'New Zealand Cup meeting. Fast Passage. Reports from Riccarton indicate that there is every chance of Fast Passage reaching the post fit and well for the Auckland Cup. Concentrate. ■ > Concentrate, though engaged in the Akaroa Handicap on Saturday, may be missing from the field. C. Emerson would have welcomed the opportunity for a race, before he left for the north, but has finally decided against delaying his' departure. The gelding will leave, for Auckland on Thursday,' an arrangement which will permit a full week’s work at Ellerslie before he has to contest the Auckland Cup. Concentrate was handicapped to carry 9.13 over the ten furlongs on Saturday,’giving 161 b. to the next horse on the list. Red Heckle, and 211 b. to Shatter. Win for Limarch. Advice has been received that Limarch, owned by Messrs. 0. Nicholson and E. R. Davis, of Auckland, won the Kirkham Stakes, for two-year-olds, at Warwick Farm, Sydney, last Saturday. The race carries £5OO added money, with a sweepstakes of £6 each, and the weights arc, colts and geldings 8.5, fillies 8.0, with penalties. Limarch is trained by J. T. Jamieson and at Randwick in October won the Breeders’ Plate, worth £ll5B to the winner. He is by Limond from Queen March. Silver Ring. Silver Ring figures in two races at the Banks Peninsula meeting on Saturday. The present intention is to start him in one of his engagements, and to ship him north on Monday night for the Auckland meeting. Christchur.ch critics agree that the Silverado three-year-old is a much-improved horse since be raced at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Hawke's Bay Horses. . The nominations , received by the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club for its New Year meeting are very good considering the times and the stakes values. There are one or two attractively-bred horses engaged in the Juvenile Handicap. J. H. Jefferd has entered on behalf of clients Senior and Bav Tree and on his own behalf Cyclonic. Bay Tree; who is by Chief Ruler, belongs to Mr. E. J. Watt.

s A Good Hack. f . King’s Knave is an acceptor for two events at the home course at Te Amamtitu on Saturday. The Comedy King—'. Eumilia five-year-old gelding has the Biinimum (7.0) in the Cup and Sib. above the minimum in the Paterangi Handicap (one mile). At his latest appearance, King's Knave finished on terms with Whakapara for first place iu the Takapuna Plate after meeting with interference in the opening stages of the seven furlongs. King’s Knave showed his ability to run out ten furlongs in the Champion Hack Cup, which he won at Te Aroha last season. The Australian-bred gelding, now n five-yenr-old, will claim good support in whatever he is produced on Saturday and he is worth following in his Ellerslie engagements.

Brilliant Sprinter. Tea Trader is working along in . his usual brilliant style at Takanini, and appears to be better now than ever before. A very speedy colt, he will be a force to be reckoned with in the Railway Handicap on Boxing Day. He has also .classic engagements, during the Christmas carnival, including the King’s Plate and the Gfbat Northern Derby, and .although, .the latter event may be. beyond him. the King’s Plate is an event that should be within his compass.

Riders for Saturday. At Riccarton on Saturday D. O’Connor is likely to ride Dorian and Hurlingbam, G. 11. Humphries will be on Crash, Importance, Silver Ring, and Bond if they meet their engagements, and R. E. Coveny expects to ride Battle Hero, Rothen, and Eclair. Strong Team. Concentrate, Fast Passage, Fracas, Jaloux, Azalea, Gay Crest, Tout le Mond, The Quorn, Cricket Bat, Silver Scorn, Borate, Great Star, and Grand Review will leave Riccarton for Auckland to-morrow. Straight Sprints. The one five-furlong and two six-fur-long races on the programme of the Banks Peninsula Racing Club's meeting at Riccarton on Saturday next will Be started from the existing barriers and not front round the turn, as at the recent North Canterbury fixture. Riders at Waipa. The following riding engagements are announced for the Waipa meeting at Te. Awamutu on Saturday: A. G. Parsons, Great Emblem, Keith Hall, Lapstone; R. McTavish, Beryl, Latour, Jonathan. Brother to Koroklo. Trevallion. who was a winner at Warwick Farm, New South Wales, on Saturday, is a five-year-old brother to Korokio. Trevallion is not up to t'he class of Koro-' kio.

Jockey’s Injury. I. Tucker, the former New Zealand rider, who has done well in the saddle since his arrival in Melbourne, received a broken collarbone when Manlius fell with him at Mentone on December 5. Manlius set out to jump with Dark Dawn, Gnaro, Comic Prince (T. Lynch), and Salonia, but he fell at the third hurdle.

Guarantee Well. Guarantee has been doing well lately. He goes to Auckland under the charge of P. McGrath, who has been associated with Mr. J. M. Samson’s stable for some time, and was in charge while C. Gieseler paid the unlucky visit to Australia with Garter Knight and Admiral Drake.

Manawatu Acceptances. Acceptances for the first day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting, to be held on December 26. 27, and 29, also final payment for the 29th Palmerston North Stakes, will close on Friday pt 9 p.m.

Taranaki Acceptances. Acceptances for the first day- of the Taranaki Jockey Club's summer meeting, to be held On December 26 and 27, will close on Friday at 9 p.m.

Bookmakers in S.A. The. South Australian Government has appointed a Royal Commission to report upon the licensing of bookmakers, and the first—probably the only—trip will be to Victoria. There is a feeling that evidence should be taken in New Zealand, but apart from the expense, which the Government would not countenance, there would not be time, because the commission must finish its inquiry by May, and there will be many witnesses in South Australia, where the proposal has. aroused conflict of opinion. The chairman is Mr, W. V. Ray, S.M.. and the other four members are legislators, with an equal representation of the Liberal and Country League and the Parliamentary Labour Party. The terms.of reference give the inquiry of the Commission a wide scope, as it will embrace "the problems of illegal betting and the best means of suppressing or controlling It.”

Donoghue Going Strong. The veteran jockey Steve Donoghue celebrated his fortyeighth birthday in Qclober,. For nine years Donoghue-was ■nt:the head of the winning list in Eng-! land. He won the English Derby six times. A wonderful little man, he is as ■popular as ever. Ho has accepted a retainer to.ride again as first jockey for Sir Victor Sassoon next year. Answer to Correspondent. “Trots,” Lower Hutt. —(1) £2/13/-. (2) £2/11/-. Foxton Nominations. Nominations for the annual meeting of the Foxton Racing Club, to be held on January 11 and 12, will close on Monday at 9 p.m. Horses fpr Taranaki. J. L. Gray intends taking Palace, Rereatu, Foulwind, and Lady Vane to the Taranaki meeting at Christmas time. Palace showed at Avondale and Ellerslie that ho can gallop well, and the Grandcourt gelding may do better where he is not meeting such big fields. Rereatu showed speed for a few furlongs in a juvenile event at Taknpuna, and now that he has had a race, he should be capable of improved form. Foul wind was taken to .Dargaville, but was not raced, ns she met with a slight injury. She should showup in hack races, while Lady Vane should also be worth consideration, as she sticks well, and can be relied upon for good efforts when the company is not strong. AV. Goscomb is another Takanini trainer who is contemplating the Taranaki trip. His team entered for that fixture is St. Ames, Bugle Cali. Kind Words, Princess Star, and Helium.

For Auckland, J. W. Lowe with Red Sun. and J. McLaughlin with Epigram, have left for Waipa. Epigram, who is engaged in the maiden does not disclose any form of a sensational nature on the tracks, but he is likely to do better in a race. Both horses are AC . .... >• 11. Telford will leave tor Ellerslie on December 19 with the two-ycar-olds Dole and Pegged Exchange. Both have done well lately, and Ore likely to win some money ou the trip.

Acceptances for the first day’s events of the Manawatu Racing Club s summer meeting, to be held on December 20. 2i, and 29. will close to-morrow (Friday) at 9 p.m.

GOLDEN WINGS FIT Gallops at Woodville RED MANFRED SPRINTS Dominion Special Service. Woodville, Dec. IL With Gold Trail leaving lor Auckland to-day, and the W oodville horses making for tlie north cany next week, there .were a number of interesting gallops ou the Woodville tracks yesterday morning. The course proper, with, the trestles about 30 leet out Horn the rails, was available for last worn, also the No. 1 grass, and the going could not have beeu better. The heavy rain at the week-end had slowed the track a bit, and the times were not as good as might have been expected. There was a lug in the early morning, but this cleared about six o'clock, alter which hour the conditions were perfect. The first to work were Royal Routine (F. Reid) and La I’oupee (W. Monk), and they were sprinted six furlongs ou the No. 1 grass, taking about Imin. I'Jsec. Royal Routine held a slight advantage at the finish, and was going along very easily. When pulled tip he. showed no sign of the lameness apparent after his gallops at Feilding last Tuesday. The son of Hunting bong and Royal Moment (is in good fettle for his Christmas engagements. Jayson was sent along over a mile and . a distance, and he hit out boldly to cover the last mile of it in Imin. 49see. He was on the No. 1 grass, so that the time was nothing out of the ordinary. He is goiug to Auckland early next week, and will be ridden by H. Dulieu in the hurdles. Foreign Queen covered six furlongs at a good three-quarter pace. There has been an improvement in her condition during the past week. ... An interesting gallop was that iu which Gold Trail (G. J. Jones) and Arajean (R. Glading) were associated. Their task was a mile on the course proper. Arajean had the outside running, and she set a merry pace from the outset. She swung very wide as they swept out of the straight. Glading quickly straightened her up, however, and she set the pace for her companion. They ran to the five furlong, barrier in 41see., to the half-mile in 54sec., and Arajean held a slight advantage at that stage, Gold Trail following her across the top and into the straight/ Arajean held her advantage to the finish, passing the post half a length ahead of her companion. They took Imin. 48 2-ssec. for the full distance. Arajean is a brilliant track worker, but Gold Trail is notoriously lazy, ’ except in a race. 11. E. Russell’s string includes a two-year-old by Lackham out of Loyal Maid, which has been named Tommy Atkins. He was worked out in the oval, and appeared anxious to make it as interesting as he could for the boy on , top. Lack appears to have lightened up a bit., but he moved very attractively in a live furlong flutter on the course proper, •cutting the first furlong out in 13 seconds, the first two in 25 3-sscc., and putting the > full distance behind in Imin. 4 2-ssec. He was going sweetly at the finish. Jones was in the saddle. Lackstone, with his trainer, A. G. Weaver, iu the saddle, was given .steady work on the plough. Lackstone has plenty of pace over a short distance, and may be worth keeping in mind for later oh in the season. Golden Wings will strip a very lit horse for the Railway Handicap at Auckland, and he will be one of the tough ones with all his weight. He was sprinted live furlongs yesterday morning, nnd.he reeled them off at the rate of 12 3-ssec. apiece, cutting the distance out easily in Imin. 3 l-sscc. , , ~ Copper King was worked on the ■plough. He is in good nick for Jus Christmas .engagements. Copper King did not have the best of spins in the Mangaraw a Handicap at Woodville, and did well to get second to False Scent. Another of Fred Davis’s team, lied Flush, was given a good work out on No. 1 grass, cutting out the last four of six furlongs in 54 seconds. The Great Northern Foal Stakes candidate, Red Manfred, was given a five furlong flutter on the course proper. After a slow beginning he ran the first furlong in 13 seconds, the second in 12 3-ssee.. and the full distance in Imin. 3 2-ssec„ moving most attractively in a very nice try-out for Auckland, where he will be very hard to dispose of. Red Manfred settles down to it when galloping,.and be gives A wrong impression of his size. He has the right disposition for the game, and F. Davis states that the colt makes himself at home whether on the boat, in the train, or in strange stables. The last to work during the morning was last year's winner of the Manawatu Cup. Arrow Lad. and Reid sent him along over a mile and a quarter. The son of Arrowsmith was not pushed at any stage, and ho ran tho last mile in Imin. 51 3-u sec. He will be ridden by B. H. Morrisin the Manawatu Cup on Boxing Day. Red Manfred is duo to leave for Auckland on Monday, mid S'. Wilson has been Oneage,d to ride the colt. H. E. Russell goes north on Tuesday with Golden Wings and Jayson, and probably Lack. Throe of Davis’s team. Copper King. Red Flush, mid Aeron, will be racing at Manawatu. Copper King will start the first day; and W. J. McDowell will be in the saddle. It is not certain that Red Flush will go to the post on the opening day. and Acron will race on the third day. J. Sullivan has five horses entered for Manawatu. B. IT. Morris will pilot Arrow Lad in the Cup. but riders have not been secured for Royal. Routine. Arajean. La Toupee or Lady Nan.

SHATTER SORE Result of Saturday’s Mishap MAY MISS AUCKLAND CUP It is possible that the mishap which occurred to Shatter on Saturday morning wil lhave serious results, so far as his immediate programme is concerned. Tho fetlock, where he was cut, was very tender to the touch on Monday (says “Argus”), and the horse moved very stiffly. He was out twice at walking exercise, and F. D. Jones hopes that in a day or two be may be fit for something more strenuous. At present, the whole position is uncertain, mid there remains Some doubt about his Auckland trip. The trainer's view, expressed on Monday, was that the Auckland Cup engagement would have to be forfeited, though he might be left in the Christmas Handicap, in the hope that he would be fit to run n mile on Boxing Day, though not in condition for a two-inlle race. It. is unlikely that Shatter will go north on Thursday, when most of the other Riccarton horses will leave, but it he makes good progress he may be shipped next Monday night. Even if he Ims to miss the first day, he may be well enough to show good form on three later days at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting. A.ll will depend, however, on how he fares during the next few days/ RICCARTON GALLOPS Cup Horses Going Along Well Horses working the reverse way with a view to Auckland had first use of the track at Riccarton on Tuesday, and they provided nearly all that was of much interest in the pre-breakfast session (says the “Star”). The trial grass and plough were available, with tin former mostly used. It was hard and fast. Fracas moved well in covering half a mile in 4(Jsec. Silver Scorn was sent nine furlongs, and accomplished her task attractively in Imin. 53 3-ssec..

Cricket Bat had plenty of way on when he reached the peg for his mile essay, and he ran the journey in lmiu. 41 2-u got to the end of her mile in Imin. 42 2?ssec. ■ . Tout le Mond was in front of Gay Crest when a mile had been run in Imin. 44 l-ssec.

East Passage went in fine style over a mile, being assisted over the second half by Dorian. She ran the distance iu Imin. 40 2-ssec., the last half in oOsec. Silver Ring was not asked to do his best in a mile trip, which he completed in Imin. 44 2-ssec. The Quorn easily beat Adelphi over half a mile in 49 3-ssec. On the plough, Jaloux and Azalia ran nine furlongs in Imin. 59 4-sscc. Concentrate pleased in a mile and a quarter task. He was assisted by Martian Chief over the last six furlongs. The full trip was run in 2min. lOsec.. and tb« last half-mile in 50sec. Red Heckle seemed to be going the better at the finish of a gnllop with Hurlingham over seven furlongs, the time being Imin. 28 3-sscc.

TROTTING NOTES Form at New Brighton SMALL G.N. DERBY FIELD (By “Overcheck.”) The New Brighton Trotting Clubs meeting on Saturday must be regarded as a highly satisfactory one, and there can be no question but that interest in the gathering was stimulated by the action of the club iu putting on a race of ten furlongs for our highest-class pacers. Gold Country Connects. After his meritorious performance in running third in the Free for All iu November the public made Gold Country :l good favourite on Saturday,: and he won in a very impressive manner. At the commencement of the race he caused his supporters some anxiety by making a slow beginning, but once he settled down he paced a great race, and in the end won very comfortably from the consistent Dillon Logan. Arethusa endeavoured to win from end to end, but she had had enough half a furlong from home. The’ race should do her good, and she has only to train on to be returned an early winner. Harold Logan also went a good race, but few expected him to win in the circumstances. Mataunga Succeeds. As was generally anticipated would be the case, Mataunga was installed favourite for the Trial Handicap, and he won with something in hand. When the field had settled down he was iu fourth position, but he was left in second berth when Don Giovanni and Page Girl broke. Once they turned for home Mataunga held the front, and was never seriously challenged. Raclaim appeared to be a certainty for second, but broke halfway down the running, and finally finished fourth. Honeymoon gave a disappointing display. Favourites Disappoint. Rcylena and Jimmy de Oro were the popular selections in the Improvers' Handicap, but each gave a disappointing display, the race being won by Tatsy de Oro, who began well and occupied a handy position throughout. Jimmy de Oro went to a prolonged tangle at the Start and was last throughout. Midnight Sun finished very resolutely in fourth place, and may hnve been in the money had he secured a clear passage over the final couple of furlongs. Radley, who was having his first race as a pacer after competing for some considerable time as a straightout trotter, ran quite a good race, but was outstayed by Tatsy de Oro and Dollar King. Spoilt by Accident. . The Bowhill Handicap was robbed of a lot of interest as the result of an accident, there being only four horses left with chances at the end of the first two and a half furlongs. Stowaway, Betty. Wrack, and Authorwood fell leaving the straight, causing Harvest Time, Harold Denver, and Avaunt to be pulled up. Hard Words also lost ground. Little Victor was going better than David McElwyn at the finish and won nicely. Nelsonian at Last.

Nelsonian, who was sent up for sale recently but failed to reach the small reserve placed on him, created somewhat of a surprise by winning the Saltaire Handicap. though it must be admitted that the field was not a particularly strong one. At the end of a mile Nelsonian had only one horse behind him, but his stamina won the day in a hard fight he had with Master Roy and Wilbur White in the straight. Master Roy was on the jolly, side and should be all the better for the race.

Poorly Supported. Considering his class it. was surprising to find that Tempest did not receive greater support in the Electric Handicap. He did not begin well, but with about five furlongs to go he was in sixth position. At the straight entrance he was just behind Oxford Queen. Wild Guy, ■ Admiral Bingen, and Headlight, but he outstayed the others in the run home to win comfortably by three lengths. Rokena. came down as they were approaching the. straight, up to which stage, she had been pacing nicely.

Great Northern Derby. It is extremely disappointing to find that only Taxpayer. Indianapolis, and Golden Direct have been accepted for in the Great Northern Derby, but these three should provide an interesting race. In such a small field each should be able to secure an uninterrupted passage, and the question of which is the best horse should be, finally established. At the moment I incline to the chances of Indianapolis.

Aynnant Cliimes. At the lust meeting of the Trotting Association the case of Ayrmont Chimes was again reviewed, as the result of an application by J. Bryce for reconsideration of the decision placing that horse on the schooling list. Bryce stated that he had given the horse a spell, and had now placed it in work again. He had also altered its gear, and thought that the complaint against tho horse in all probability would not occur again. He would suggest taking the horse to the metropolitan track, or he would be willing start it in a race if he were made to run it on the outside of the field, the public to be notified accordingly. It was resolved to take no action. An Innovation.

The- committee of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club has decided to put 011 a special feature at the February meeting in the form of a mile and a half race from a flying start between trotters. Wrockier and Stanley T, have already been secured, and at the moment the club is trying to get Olive Nelson and Huon Voyage to compete also. Even if they are not attracted, the race between n tackier and Stanley T. will still be held.

Wairarapa Meeting. Owners are reminded that acceptances for the Wairarapa meeting on Monday, December 26, close at 6 p.m, on Friday, December 16.
