COUNTRY’S DAY

Town Bowlers Punished ‘ANNUAL CRICKET GAME Visitors Make Good Score FREEMAN 76 NOT OUT The weakness of bowling in the city this season was revealed at the. Basin Reserve yesterday when the annual trial of cricketing strength between Town and Country was commenced. Winning the toss, the Country team held possession of th wickets for practically the whole day, and amassed the solid score of 435 runs in their first innings. Starting /very quietly, the Country tats men, several of whom were colts, took the bloom off the weak city bowling, and then took heavy toll of it. live batsmen passed tile half-century. The runs were put oh in a style which showed that the coaching which the Country players receive is along right lines. . . ' Of the Country team originally selected, H. M. McGirr (Nelson) and M. A. O’Brien (Hawke’s Bay) did not put in an appearance, and their places were filled by W. Hayward (Rangitikei) and D. L. Freeman (Nelson). These two emergency players rose to the occasion in great style, Hayward scoring S2 and Freeman 76 not out. . The weather was fine, the wicket firm, and the outfield fast, though a blustering northerly wind made matters unpleasant throughout the day. W. Norris (Manawatu)' was elected captain of the Country eleven, and had nd hesitation, when he beat C. S. Dempster for the toss, in deciding to take first strike D. A. Cameron (Rangitikei) and G. H/ B. Bullock-Douglas (Wanganui) opened the Country innings at 11.5 a.m.. and with 17 runs on the slate the Wanganui man stepped in front of a straight one from Barsloe and fell l.b.w. !• A Solid Partnership. 11. B. Massey (Wairarapa) then joined Cameron, and the pair by sound batting took the bloom off the Town team’s two fast-medium bowlers, and were not separated until they had put on 93 for the second wicket. With the total at 110 Cameron, who' had reached 61, was trapped by an unorthodox delivery’ from Griffiths. The Kilbiruie slow bowler, with good judgment, tossed one high above the batsman’s head. Cameron was so surprised that he could not refrain from, trying to reach this aerial delivery. He just touched it with his bat, and a sound innings was terminated by an easy’ catch to Crook in the slips. Cameron showed sound defence, and revealed a pleasing variety of strokes in hitting eleven fours. .1. R. Mete Kingi (Wanganui) came next, and. helped Massey to carry on till the luncheon adjournment, when the score stood at 122 for. two wickets, Massey being 47. A Bright Innings. On resuming, Massey continued to forge the.score along with well-placed shots, but with the total at 143 he stepped in front in attempting to glide a straight one from Griffiths, and fell l.b.w. Massey played finished cricket for his 60, which included seven boundary strokes. W. Norris, the Country captain, came next, and he and Mete Kingi ran the score along to 162, where the Wanganui player was bowled by a faster one from Morris. A. Newman, the tall Nelson representative, then partnered his captaiu, and the pair gave the Town players some active exercise before the next wicket fell. Flaying'very soundly, they rau the score from 162 to 236 before Newman, in attempting to drive one from Crook, failed to get on to it properly, and was taken by Dustin at mid-on. The Nelson man shaped confidently for his 41. which included six fours. He helped Norris to add 74 for the fifth wicket. N. Gallichan, one of the best batsmen on the Country side, had no luck, as he was snapped up by Blandford behind the sticks first tall he received. An Aggressive Youngster. W. Hayward (Rangitikei) at once showed that he knew something of taetics by taking strike a foot out of his ground to Parsloe. 'This put the Old Boy fast bowler off his length, and Haywood made half-volleys of his good length balls to such purpose that 36 runs camo from the next three overs Parsloe sent down. After the seventh wicket had added 43. Norris’s.’ bright innings came to an end for 57. The Country captaiu exploited the hook shot cleverly, and most of his six boundaries came from this stroke., •I. Newman did not last long, being well taken low down by Dempster at second slip off Crook. The Town players imagined that the end was now in sight, but they altogether reckoned without Hayward and Freeman. This pair gave a delightful exhibition of free scoring, while adding 103 for the ninth wicket. Freeman proved himself a finished batsmau. making his strokes with ease and polish, while Hayward was always looking for runs. They scored off almost every ball, and frequently rattled the leather up against the fences. When one short of -100. Hnyward. who had reachcd'S2. was bowled by Griffiths. The Rangitikei colt showed confidence and resource throughout, hitting nine fours. Last-Wicket Stand. 11. M. Nairn, a Hawke's Bay colt, lent Freeman valuable aid in putting on 36 thus for tile lust wicket. ■ SV ith the total at. 435, Nairn, who had scored 15. was caught by Morris off Browne, and the Country team’s innings came to nil end at 5.35 for the splendid total of 435., Freeman was left unbeaten with 76 Io bis credit. His was an innings which would have reflected credit upon a seasoned Plunket Shield player. He scarcely ■made a faltering stroke, and timed his drives to perfection, hitting seven fours. The Town bowling lacked variety. Crook, Griffiths, and Morris came out of the trying ordeal best, but Parsloe and Browne came in for punishment. The fieldsmen stuck to their work well, with Lamason. Griffiths, Ross, and Du Chateau showing up best. The match will be concluded to-day, play commencing at 11 a.m. The Town Team, which has 12 on without loss, will have to bat well to clear the big hurdle the Country eleven has set them.
