SPRING IN DESERT
From Aridness to Fertility The desert region of Gadames, about 500 miles south of Tripoli, is likely to become a highly fertile region as the result of boring operations which have been undertaken there. At a depth of 750 feet engineers opened up a powerful spring which threw up a geyser-like column of water which speedily inundated the surrounding territory, The spring has a yield of 120 tons a minute and is of thermal character, the issuant temperature being 8S degrees. By the construction of canals the spring is sufficient to irrigate 1200 acres, the soil being perfectly cultivable. Further boring operations are being conducted in the hope of discovering other springs. The local population is enthusiastic about the find. Steps are being taken to plant palms and other trees in the irrigated areas
